#Ventor on the #IsleOFWight suffered deluge of flying ants 100 years ago
The roads and pavements of the High Street, other thoroughfares, the Esplanade and the beach were said to have become literally smothered with myriads of these #insects.
Holidaymakers were forced to return to their rooms, and those venturing outside were said to have been covered by #ants from head to foot.

This reminds me of the day I was sitting on a bench in my garden and was suddenly engulfed by a cloud of flying beasties which is how I discovered that flying ants were a thing and they all do it at the same time…….
Lovely

Why seagulls get ‘drunk’ on Flying Ant Day
Scientists have suggested the ants produce an acid that gets the birds “slightly” drunk
The gulls are mad for them.
This leads to gulls stealing food from people’s hands & also reports of seagulls flying into buildings or cars
RSPB gull expert says
I think they just make them happy
They are distracted, happy, focusing on eating ants rather than looking out for cars

So the roughly 1000 flying ants that came down the chimney last night have spread around the house and died overnight, so that's nice. There must have been tens of thousands outside at the windows, green house and solar panels though.
I wonder if I can see a dip on the solar yield graphs.

Is there anyone here who knows about ants?
We've recently moved into a place. The previous occupants left a barrel/drum out the back, and it's full of ants and flying ants (among what looks like the remnants of fires or barbecues - lots of loose, black charcoaly stuff).
We have to get rid of the barrel, which means scooping out and binning the contents.
WHAT TO DO?? 😦
