Before downloading things on the #internet was the main (if not the only) way to get software for your computer -- You could get a bunch of #demos for #videoGames and #software in a #cdRom that came as the cover for a magazine.
#Linux distros would also commonly be distributed in those, and the magazine would often be about Linux itself
If you, like me, were a child without your own disposable income, 90% of your "PC Game Library" was demos and shareware from those cover discs. And you'd just play the few levels/missions the demo came with over and over again.

And at least in my country, magazine cover discs lived well into the mid aughts, after the internet became common. Only instead of demos and shareware, they'd often come with a bunch of free #flashGames poached from #newgrounds and such.
