Sometimes when I watch an indie cartoon or read an indie comic, I can pick up on what inspired the artist and every time it just feels like copying. Like there's one that had writing and character design directly out of Smiling Friends and one that had realistic, uncomfortable dialogue from Fritz the Cat or Netflix dramas. It just kinda leaves me feeling empty.
It's like being inspired by Hayao Miyazaki, so you make your characters trip a lot because you watched that one video essay about how the girl from Ponyo (or some other Ghibli movie) tripped when putting on her shoes in one scene. Not because the girl tripping was used to show her humanity, the artist putting his view on life into his work, but because it's a thing their favorite artist did and they want to recreate that aesthetic. Like a lot of internet cartoons are references/shout-outs to other media, not inspirations.
I don't know if I'm just depressed or if I'm picking up on something.
