@DePemig another fediverse-related social science project I think would be really insightful is interviewing former fediverse developers, to find out why they moved on. I'm thinking not just of people who developed fediverse apps (server or clients or both), but people who ran fediverse community portals, help guides, instance stats sites, formal organisations like Feneas, etc.
