  1. CW: Long thread/22

    @alan @pluralistic

    #Daikin has entered the chat…

    github.com/revk/ESP32-Faikin

Daikin enshittified their aircon firmware in one fell swoop with their 2.9.0 (IIRC) update, breaking the local API – which worked perfectly well with #HomeAssistant – and forcing people to use their (shitty, natch) app instead^

their shitty app periodically forced you to apply their “optional” firmware update (even when you’ve explicitly set the “automatically upgrade firmware” toggle to the “fuck no” position) by preventing you from even using the app to control your device until you submitted to installing the upgrade (i.e. they bricked their own app until you agreed to brick (more or less) your aircon) 😡🤬

in the case of the #Faikin #ESP32 module though, it has to be installed inside the aircon head unit, which involves touching (in AU) 240V mains power – and in AU you can’t do that (legally) unless you’re a sparky 💁‍♀️

plus, I expect that an insurance company might decline to pay out if your house burns down as a result of a fault in your aircon & they discover you had a non-vendor-approved hardware mod installed 😤

it’s neat little bows all the way down… 😕

^ which also strongly encourages you to sign up for & use their cloud platform so you could send a packet around the world to change the temp on your aircon & if you lost internet connection, welp, sucks to be you 💁‍♀️

  2. If you are in #Japan and would like to upgrade your ACs to #faikin let me know, I can help with domestic PCB order + have Engineer crimper for JST cables and can help with installation.

    日本在住で#faikinのアップグレードに関するサポートが必要な方は、メッセージをお送りください。PCBの現地注文の手配をお手伝いできますし、ケーブル用のJST EHクリンパーもご用意しています。

  3. Big shout out to @revk and their github.com/revk/ESP32-Faikin project that reverse engineers remote control protocol of Daikin AC units and removes dependency on semi-working IR blaster controllers or official Daikin cloud back-and-forth and proprietary phone app remote. I live in Japan - home of Daikin and had zero issues installing and making Faikins work in all my domestic units. They did not have S21 port so I also had to add official interface boards. #homeassistant #faikin

  4. Looking to buy some 3D printed cases for faikin modules. Anyone with a 3D printer wanna sell me some? I need 4.

Ideally someone in the EU to avoid excessive shipping fees.

  5. Switched my office to new #Faikin remote controller. Will work through the rest of the house.

Working well. This is an early board with no button.

For this I have an external DS18B20 temperature probe, and it works well.

Crazy as I have three other temperature sensors on the board, but a DS18B20 seems way easier than most as away from the heat of the board. The SCD41 is second best, but other sensors on board need an "adjustment" (which is easy enough).

  7. So, 500 #Faikin PCBs.
I am very pleased with JLCPCB, as they all worked.

The breakdown of my time now…
    1 hour unpacking
1½ hours flashing with TC2030 leads
1 hour bagging in anti static bags
    2 hours labelling!

It was tedious and repetitive which is not work I ever do, if I can avoid it. But on their way to Amazon.

  8. I can't believe someone has found the S21 message to query the fan status in a way that reports night/quiet and auto separately!

It is special, being a one byte response. First I have seen like that which actually broken my debug (probably why I never found it before).

But finally, #Faikin can tell Night/Quiet from Auto, at long long last.

  9. I am going to have to order more #Faikin PCBs at this rate, going well on Amazon!

Loving the #KiCAD render. I have a part with a 3D model that is a non reflective white block WRL below the PCB in my design. Works well to get a clean shadow.

At least two parts on that board were hand crafted WRL as well.

  10. Latest #Faikin design with TC2030 pads on a tab. It should be possible to snap off - I get test boards this week.

  11. @viper539 , depending on your affinity to fiddling with hardware, suitability and compatibility, you might want to explore #Faikin, which has been mentioned in this thread. You can find the project at:

  12. New temp sensor (actually e-paper) to link in to my #Faikin stuff. May be job for the morning.

Price wise this is silly compared to the generic BLE temp sensors for pence, but it is quite solid build and, as I say, e-paper. It also stands up as well as sticks to something, so yeh, not a bad thing.

  13. Half way done for new #Faikin boards. This takes ages....

  14. A short, 3 night, holiday with my wife and a couple of friends (because it is my birthday shortly). Thank you all, very nice, and heading home this morning.

The #Faikin project (faikin.revk.uk) has been going a long time, but has got a bit more popular lately. Normally just the occasional question.

But as soon as I went on holiday it was at least a dozen distinct and valid bug/feature/queries (some I have tackled from my lap top) from different people.

Crazy. Hope to clean my inbox today.

  15. These are fun - seems they can easily be re-flashed (over BLE) to be sane, and not need an app.

And I have now made my #Faikin modules work with them (when reflashed).

At £9+battery from Amazon, that is crazy! And, wow, 10 for £30 on AliExpress including battery!

I am planning to set up one of these, a Shelly Mini, and a wax radiator actuator, to allow per room radiator control at my daughter's house.

  16. Oooh, and an issue with my MDNS clashing with Matter. This will also be fun!

    Update:

It looks like the basic issue was indeed MDNS. In hindsight this is blindingly obvious. I was hijacking the UDP port with my own MDNS for name.local web pages.

I cut down and cut down my stuff until that came to light. Now I have to build back step by step (order of initialisation matters).

I want matter to be an entirely optional extra on my #Faikin modules if I can.

  17. Putting the Last 10 current stock of #Faikin modules on special offer at £10. These are the smaller modules, and work with all the #Daikin models listed on faikin.revk.uk using an S21 interface lead. I'll then stock up with newer modules that are slightly bigger.

  18. Phew, new #Faikin boards work. Well, work for me.

I’ve a couple of people to post them to to confirm working on the more problematic models.

  19. I have my new #Faikin samples, and the seem to work as expected, which is nice.

  20. The latest #Faikin code and hardware cycles trying inverted Tx and non inverted Tx, so will work even if old modules are upgraded. Just waiting on latest samples (maybe this week) before I can order the next batch. I really love #KiCad
