  1. Get your data out now! 🚀

BMC has a special edition on “The Extracellular Matrix,” and I’m honoured to guest edit. We’re accepting manuscripts on all aspects of ECM, but if you know my background, you’ll know I’m especially excited about structural data and collagens 😉.

BMC has a solid JIF and welcomes all scientifically valid studies—so write up your story now and submit!

📩 DM me if you have questions or check out biomedcentral.com/collections/

"Brevican (BCAN) ... and growth differentiation factor 15 ... showed the most significant, and multiple, associations with dementia, stroke and movement functions."
    nature.com/articles/s43587-024

"Brevican is a secreted member of the lectican/hyalectan family of hyaluronan-binding chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs; (Faissner et al., 2010)). Mediated by binding of homologous C-type lectin motifs in the C-terminal domain, brevican comprises a structural factor of the ECM together with tenascins and hyalurolan (Bekku et al., 2009). It is predominantly present in perineuronal nets (PNNs) of the adult CNS and is transiently expressed by neurons during development."

  7. Filamentous Phage Shields schaechter.asmblog.org/schaech @STCmicrobeblog

Phage liquid crystalline droplets form occlusive sheaths that encapsulate and protect infectious rod-shaped #bacteria (2020) pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas

"in #biofilms and due to the presence of #ExtracellularMatrix #polymers, Pf4 #phage particles form highly ordered yet dynamic #LiquidCrystals (tactoids) that surround the cells. Quite interestingly, these #tactoids confer on the cells an increased tolerance to #antibiotics."

  8. Folded membrane microdomains between the cuticle and epidermis called 'meisosomes' have a role in maintaining and patterning these structures in #CElegans. and its connection with the #ExtracellularMatrix. elifesciences.org/articles/759

  9. Four good things happened at work today. Almost unheard of.

Two great bits of new data. #cilia #Golgi #ExtracellularMatrix
One modified piece of equipment that means we can do some cool new experiments.
And I got some code to run a mathematical model given to us by a collaborator. New software. Step learning curve.

Worth remembering days like these. They do still happen!

  10. Through the eyes of an #osteocyte. In #bone, this is what the environment of partially embedded osteocytes (osteoblastic–osteocytes) is like!

Scanning electron microscopy has been used to observe the orientation of mineral platelets in relation to osteoblastic–osteocyte lacunae on the surface of deproteinized trabecular bone in adult sheep.

  13. Great review from Nicola Stevenson. Part of our team in Biochemistry at the U of Bristol researching #Golgi #cilia and #extracellularmatrix

    journals.biologists.com/bio/ar

Part of Biology Open's series of Future Leader Reviews. @BiologyOpen

Nikki is making great progress on our @BBSRC sLoLa.
This review includes some thoughts beyond her current work towards more integration with cilia biology.
