Z powodu gigantycznych opóźnień i przekroczenia budżetu agencja rezygnuje z kluczowego elementu rakiety księżycowej, za który miał odpowiadać amerykański gigant.
Relacje na linii Boeing – NASA są obecnie napięte do granic możliwości. Najnowsze doniesienia wskazują, że amerykańska agencja kosmiczna postanowiła znacząco przebudować swój flagowy program księżycowy Artemis, a główną ofiarą tych zmian jest wart 3,2 miliarda dolarów kontrakt podpisany z Boeingiem w 2022 roku.
Kasa płynie, postępów brak
Sprawa dotyczy potężnego, górnego stopnia rakiety (Exploration Upper Stage – EUS), który miał być sercem zmodernizowanej wersji ogromnej rakiety SLS (Block 1B). Ten zaawansowany element miał być wyposażony w większe zbiorniki paliwa i cztery potężne silniki RL10, co miało umożliwić transport cięższych ładunków i załogi na Księżyc w późniejszych fazach programu.
Problem w tym, że projekt zamienił się w finansową studnię bez dna. Raport biura audytorskiego NASA wykazał, że koszty stworzenia samego stopnia EUS drastycznie wymknęły się spod kontroli – z początkowo szacowanych 982 milionów dolarów w 2017 roku, kwota ta urosła do prognozowanych 2,8 miliarda dolarów. Co gorsza, termin oddania sprzętu przesunął się z 2021 na 2027 rok, co bezpośrednio zagrażało harmonogramowi misji Artemis 4.
NASA wybiera alternatywę
Agencja powiedziała wreszcie „dość”. Zdecydowano się anulować kosztowną aktualizację rakiety do wersji Block 1B i pozostać przy jej obecnej, sprawdzonej konfiguracji. Ten ruch ma pozwolić na utrzymanie szybszego tempa lotów, ale oznacza również wyrzucenie do kosza całego projektu EUS od Boeinga.
Według nieoficjalnych informacji agencji Bloomberg, NASA zamierza zastąpić rozwiązanie Boeinga górnym stopniem Centaur V (pochodzącym z rakiety Vulcan), produkowanym przez United Launch Alliance (ULA). Sytuacja jest o tyle ironiczna, że ULA to spółka joint venture należąca po połowie do… Boeinga i Lockheed Martin. Mimo to, odcięcie od wyłącznego kontraktu to dla Boeinga potężny cios finansowy (wymuszający dzielenie się zyskami) i kolejna rysa na reputacji.
Utracone zaufanie
Odstawienie Boeinga na boczny tor w programie Artemis dobitnie pokazuje, że problemy firmy sięgają znacznie głębiej niż tylko nieudane loty komercyjne na ISS.
