(Bild: ESA) #ers2

Any pieces that didn't get burned up in the #atmosphere would spread out "somewhat randomly" over a span of hundreds of kilometers. #ERS2 🛰️ was about as long as a city bus and weighed over 5,000 pounds. Experts say it's extremely unlikely, but not entirely impossible, that a piece of #SpaceJunk could fall out of the sky and hit someone ☠️ https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/02/21/satellite-ers-2-tracking-space-junk/72687974007/

"Bus-sized European satellite crashes to Earth over Pacific Ocean" by @SpaceDotCom / @BrettTingley - NOAA radar showed debris fall where ESA said #ERS2 re-entered over the North Pacific https://www.space.com/satellite-ers-2-esa-reentry-earth-atmosphere #ERS2reentry #reentry #SpaceJunk

The European Space Agency (ESA) ERS-2 satellite re-entered the Earth's atmosphere earlier today over the North Pacific Ocean. I used a lot of radar images from this satellite in years past, but I am happy that they were able to de-orbit it and reduce potential space junk. It was some luck that it fell over the 75% of the Earth that is ocean. #ers2 #esa #radar

Update 21 February, 18:35 CET —
We have now reached the end of the final reentry window. We have received no new observations of ERS-2. This may mean that the satellite has already reentered, but we are waiting for information from our partners before we can confirm.

📆 21 February 2024 17:23 The #ERS2 #satellite 🛰️ has cleared #Hawaii 🏝️, according to the Satflare tracker. There’s a vast expanse of #PacificOcean 🌊 before it hits land again, though its #reentry is now way overdue ⏳ https://www.independent.co.uk/space/satellite-crash-ers-2-live-earth-where-time-b2499863.html

The #reentry of the big ESA #satellite #ERS2 is now expected on 21 February at ~13:00 UTC +/-5 hours by https://twitter.com/jremis/status/1760046284415930729 or at ~16:30 UTC +/-4.5 hours by https://blogs.esa.int/rocketscience/2024/02/05/ers-2-reentry-live-updates/ or at ~16:30 UTC +/-5 hours by https://aerospace.org/reentries/23560 - a nice convergence of independently run models.

Aerospace Corp reentry prediction for #ERS2 is similar: 21 Feb 2024 16:31 UTC ± 5 hours
Expect re-entry forecasts to change dynamically but within a decreasing range with updates from radar and telescope observations. https://aerospace.org/reentries/23560 #ERS2reentry #reentry #SpaceJunk -

Die #ESA mag es als #ERS2 bezeichnen, für mich ist das ganz klar ein imperialer TIE-Jäger! 😱
