@thisislieven Well, it certainly wants to throw more money at ARTE (the online platform has recently added more languages), but EUropeans in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria etc. either don't know or don't care about the EU budget negotiations, so... not holding my breath. Would be a great use of the rebate money oh nvm, most of their voters have no idea what EU budget rebates are either, so nobody's pressuring them to #EndRebates

Although... there IS something EUropens from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands can do to purge this shame, if you're so inclined. Once summer ends, all of our governments who run the EU will be negotiating the EU budget. Your countries are among those that still cling to Thatcher-era rebates that the rest of us pay to cover up a ~60 billion euro gap in the budget. #EndRebates Details here:

@xjki There is a ~63 billion hole in the EU's budget I'd be happy to fully redirect to defence (both within the EU and for Ukraine), but Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden refuse to #EndRebates Party like it's the height of Thatcherism. #FrugalsInTrenches

@VoltEuropa Hola! I only found you just now. May I suggest to use the #EUpol tag? Not for everything, but I have it bookmarked, but don't use the various national parties/national politics tags so I haven't come across your posts until someone reposted it on my timeline.
That said, my actual question is: why are pro 🇪🇺 parties (broad spectrum) so passive and letting the EPP walk all over us? Where is the public outreach campaign for the EU budget battle to #EndRebates ? #MFFbutNotTheFunKind -

@voltdeutschland @ignacyy I saw Greta Thunberg RAGE at "the EU" the morning after the Recovery Fund was agreed for not financing green policy enough, even though she did NOTHING to raise awareness in Sweden via her massive platform that the SWEDISH gvt was one of the Frugals who had to be appeased with cuts. tldr: as long as Merz & co. feel no pressure to finance certain things in the 🇪🇺 budget (other than farmers), we can't have nice things. Where's the #EndRebates campaign, btw?

Well, financing via 1. whatever of member statelets GNI is no way to finance a Union that needs massive investments anyway, so if they don't want to pay 3 percent instead, they could always go to market. Every single EU issuance so far has been massively oversubscribed and investors are desperate to park their money in safe 🇪🇺 assets. Quit whining and do eurobonds.

@janeishly @saustrup The TV channel hasn't expanded, the previous 🇩🇪 government didn't finance it even though it told 🇫🇷 it agreed to it. So that's something to fight over in the next EU budget negotiation this year and the next. (Where 🇩🇪 is also refusing to #EndRebates from the Thatcher era, so not sure how the current 🇩🇪 government squares that, maybe it will push the other #FrugalsInTrenches to quit being penny-pinchers). The streaming platform is available everywhere.

Should've said subscription-free, ARTE is a public channel mostly financed by France+Germany. France has been pushing to expand ARTE in all 24 EU languages and use it as our 🇪🇺 public broadcaster for nearly a decade. Germany refused to pay, but recently they seem to have got a jolt and now propose to finance it via the EU budget. They still refuse to #EndRebates tho (a 49 billion hole frugals drill in the EU budget), so let's see how they square that circle.

@SuneAuken @drdave89 We could have 49 extra billions in the EU budget to at least start to finance some of these much needed autonomy basic tools and yet the German, Danish, Swedish, Dutch, Austrian governments still act like it's 1981 and refuse to #EndRebates They continue to blow a 7 billion euro a year hole in the EU budget. Can someone please tell them Thatcher is dead?

Beginnen Sie mit der einfachsten Maßnahme, die über die offen gesagt peinlichen Thatcher-Rabatte für den EU-Haushalt hinausgeht. 7 Milliarden pro Jahr, 49 insgesamt. Wir zahlen den Gegenwert einer Kaffeetasse pro EU-Bürger an die EU, und die deutsche Regierung ist vehement dagegen, den EU-Haushalt aufzustocken und der EU eigene Finanzmittel zuzugestehen. Sie wird weiterhin auf den beschämenden Rabatten aus der Thatcher-Ära bestehen, die der EU 49 Milliarden Euro vorenthalten. #EndRebates

Until they touch the stove, your governments will feel no incentive to make the much needed investments needed at 🇪🇺 level for 🇪🇺 autonomy. The hot plate is much more likely to come from US withdrawal (de facto if not de jure) as a sizeable chunk of voters in frugal/Atlanticist 🇪🇺 states are convinced I'll spend THEIR money

@rien @EUCommission Individually every single one of them would be a hypocrite as they ALL act like this to some extent, they just take turns being shitty on different topics. But in coalitions it's what happens at the hotel bar at 3am after the third consecutive sleepless night of the EUCO negotiations when it's clear that Germany is no longer available to hide behind (and neither is the UK, one of our many Brexit benefits). But #EndRebates ? Not painful, not hard for a 1 Trillion 💶 economy.

@muzicofiel The EU budget is ridiculously small and countries like the Netherlands blow a 7 billion hole in it each year by demanding rebates to their EU budget contributions like it's 1981. So if the Dutch want 🇪🇺 to invest more in anything, they can start by asking their government to fund 🇪🇺 to meet these investment expectations. Good thing negotiations for the next multiannual 🇪🇺 budget are just starting, here's your opportunity to contact your government to #EndRebates do #eurobonds etc. etc.
