It's fun to watch EUropeans on Mastodon react and, don't get me wrong, I do appreciate your solidarity with Spain, but some of you don't stay awake for 3am EU budget negotiations to watch your governments act pretty much like this and it shows. National governments are cloaked in this sort of 🇪🇺 nobility cloak when it comes to #EUpol because few back home even pay attention to what they do in Brussels. They act even worse for #MFFButNotTheFunKind
(That said... fuck you in particular, Denmark!😒)

tldr: we pay higher spreads on debt we need to finance the #EU because German and Dutch politicians have to hide the (insufficient) joint EU debt from their voters because they made them believe it's morally hazardous to issue EU debt because lazy Southerners would spend it on booze and twinks.
At my most voracious, eurobisexual peak, I could at best blow 2 billion a year on wine and groupies. Still leaves 798 for climate change mitigation and Ukraine. 🥂

@voltdeutschland @ignacyy And it's great. How are we financing it? YOU're not in government, it's ultimately Merz who's going to be negotiating the EU's next 7-year budget. (And maaaybe some SPD minion at lower levels). I wasn't blaming you for not getting us money for it, but I see a bizarre apathy about the #MFFButNotTheFunKind from pro-🇪🇺 parties. And I've seen this eurocinema before, I know how it goes. I'm one of a handful of freaks on the continent who stayed up 96 hours for the '21 summit.

@hadon Ah, yes, that's the catch. Though it's absolutely the best use of the #MFFbutNotTheFunKind and if the German government actually pushes for it during the EU budget negotiations, it will have done more for the EU than the SPD and Greens and FDP (lol) who put it in their coalition agreement (France has been asking for it since 2017, I think) and then never, ever agreed to finance it. Imagine being more shit at EU affairs than the CDU. 😭

@odd @EUCommission "a shame though that it's only for higher education." That hasn't been the case since 2014, that's why it's Erasmus PLUS now. You'll see on the intro page that this is in part possible because during the previous battle for the #MFFbutNotTheFunKind (the EU budget) they wanted a Hit, something to brag about and doubled the funds. Negotiations for the new multi-annual 🇪🇺 budget are now basically, so here's an idea... YOU can help, especially from 🇳🇱 . ;)

@rodrigo_silva @EUCommission Good.👏The faster we internalise that it's our national governments who ARE "the EU", who run it & finance it in the Council(s), not the Commission, and it's them we should ask for money+competences for 🇪🇺 to do stuff we want, the better. We have an epic EU budget battle about to start, maybe they need to hear more of this kind of POV from Europeans (especially the guys and girls from EPP governments) and not treat the EU budget as national booty. #MFFbutNotTheFunKind

@rodrigo_silva @EUCommission The "guys" in question are our national governments in the two Councils, the EU doesn't have its own money and doesn't control their public broadcasters. 💶⚖️ But yes, we already have a successful model to build on, #ARTE is availabe in 6 languages. EBUTV can come larer. So now our governments need to know we want the EU to have a proper budget to finance it. #MFFbutNotTheFunKind
