When keeping an eye on how to better connect, our communication strategies take center stage.
And as always, I'm thinking about the #EMGTwitter implications.

Important thread on emergencies in small communities:
RT @ty_olsen
Cache Creek is an example of one of those vulnerable small communities that will never have the resources (both in $, manpower, & governing talent) necessary to actually solve their disaster problems. https://twitter.com/Spearacanoe/status/1653548238983815168

And more details on the #EastPalestine #EastPalestineIncident ...

RT @PreparednessJoe
I grew up about 30 miles from East Palestine, love trains, and am obviously an emergency manager. Here’s a thread on what we know about the train derailment, the response, and things I am thinking about. #EastPalestine #EMGTwitter 🧵 (1/15)

It's amazing how much the New Twitter® suppresses engagement from non-paying accounts.
I posted this thread on both Twitter and Mastodon and, despite it being specifically about #EMGTwitter, @NOAAComms, etc there's WAAY more take-up and discussion at Mastodon.
Crazy.

@0x0ddc0ffee they do, but few people are listening.
It's important to get the message out via channels people are actually listening to, rather than hoping they'll come to some setup you've made for that purpose.
Good Emergency Communications serves up the message via delivery, not take-out.
-
@aka_quant_noir they generally all do have other ways to get the info, for instance if your local community uses Alertable or Voyent Alert they both have top-notch apps which also deliver Weather Alerts.
Problem is getting people to put them on their phones.
Good Emergency Communications serves up the message via delivery, not take-out.

Twitter's new policy will likely shut down thousands of #EMGTwitter emergency alerting and emergency management accounts.
Every time you reduce the methods of communication in an emergency you risk human lives and property damage.
RT @apukwa
Will Environment Canada pay to maintain its 840 weather warning bots? Will Natural Resources Canada pay to maintain its automated Earthquake bots?
Will NOAA pay to distribute it's Tsunami warning…

@pteranodo I saw one mention of Team Rubicon (via their hashtag) by way of an apparent volunteer who was participating in a disaster exercise. I'm mostly familiar with U.S. relief groups & EM agencies so I'm sure that there are many I won't even be aware of - maybe someone who sees this from the #EmergencyManagement or #EMGtwitter world will have ideas where to look? There are already many emergency managers here looking around & learning how Mastodon operates, so hopefully we'll see more soon.

Emergency Management folks, do we want our own instance/server on Mastodon? It would be limited to folks in public and private sector emergency management. The goal is to be able to exchange ideas, best practices, AARs, and information. #smem #EMGTwitter #emergencymanagment #emergencypreparedness #emergencyplanning

Spent the last couple of days updating my #TwitterMigration #MastodonNoob link list of articles, videos, resources etc... - added several more links to things that should be helpful or interesting to my #EMGtwitter #SMEM (Social Media in Emergency Management) friends and colleagues. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dtdqk3l0jbh-pVY3rGJ1tBvTCxSGhg2D0kYUe_eymEQ/edit?usp=sharing

CW: birdsite mentions
(2) Also regarding autoposting from birdsite: I'm hoping that government accounts will set up here even if they can't initially engage. As #Mastodon user numbers grow, having official accounts that can share info on subjects like public safety information or disaster recovery could be beneficial even if autoposted. There are many like myself coming here seeking community who have participated in various aspects of social media for emergencies; #SMEM, #EMGtwitter, #VOST and more.

Thankful for my emergency management friends for building Mastadon accounts & making contingency plans. Anyone planning a Mastadon instance/server specifically for their agency yet? I've seen posts on news media orgs setting up instances to host their staff & official accounts; where will EM agencies & orgs go? Setting up your own instance seems wise if possible security concerns can be addressed. It certainly would eliminate "verification" issues... #EMGtwitter #EMGmastodon #smem #IAEM #NEMA
