Feeling nostalgic. Might delete later.
This might surprise you, but #Dgar got very political there for a while. There was even a time when I was the delegate for the local Greens branch. One election year, I made this video to get members from other branches to help us out at an event.

CW: Boring Dgar music stats
I wish I could tell you which songs people enjoy most from the new album, but it depends on where I get my information from. On Soundcloud, Only The Music, and Virtual Scrolls are the most popular. On Apple Music, Airlock, and Anymore are most popular. On Spotify, they’re listening to Stupid and All Zombies Go To Heaven. If I check Radio spins, It’s Always Monday On The Moon and Little Black Hatchback are what the DJs are enjoying.
Seriously, it’s impossible to interpret anything except that people, on the whole, are enjoying the new album.
I love that.

I was invited to Mastodon on Facebook, by a handsome werewolf. Now I pretty much live on Mastodon, and rarely post anything to Facebook.
Encourage people on other platforms to join us. It can be a life-changing experience for them.

#DgarMusic is not quite “metal” but might sometimes be considered “quiet” metal.
Or maybe just a bit metallic… at times…

It’s 3:30 am and I’ve just finished recording the guitar track for a tune that wandered into my head at 1:30 am.
Melodies often visit in the middle of the night just before I drift off to sleep, but I’ve never been able to remember them when I wake up. I got this one though, and I like how it sounds.
I hope it still sounds good in the morning.

Fortunately, the car park was undamaged, and the Nokia was, of course, fine.

I bought Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition retail on the day of release.
Two weeks later, I ordered a Mac.

I took the video on the way home from work. These are pretty-faced wallabies, or whip-tailed wallabies. They often hang out around my driveway.

On November 30, 2022, I tooted for the first time on Mastodon.
“Hello world!”
Then I began tooting my #music and a ton of #puns #jokes, and #memes. Everyone here responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I was very quickly made to feel at home.
My deepest gratitude goes out to the #Mastodon community, a #community that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. You have been my friends, my therapists, my critics and fans, as well as an inspiration and reliable sounding board. Mastodon really is unlike any other “social media platform” out there.
Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of twelve thousand followers, and I wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.
Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.
Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. Your support has been amazing.
But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here has predominantly been one of acceptance and support, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.
Massive huge love and big gigantic hugs to you all,

Song writing can be a bit of a process sometimes. How a song is first written and the forms it takes as it's being worked on can be a far cry from where it ends up. Here's an example I stumbled upon while looking for something else in the D'gar archives; the first recording of a new song that I had just written to present to the couple of guys that I would often collaborate with.
Presenting: It's Always Monday On The Moon, first recording, from New Years Day, 2021.
If you haven't heard the released version yet, you can listen to the Single version of It's Always Monday On The Moon, by Dgar, on my Bandcamp or wherever you prefer to stream your music.

#BandcampFriday has arrived!
I have told this story on here before, but this is my first Bandcamp Friday, so I’m going to tell it again. It is the story behind how my song “Proud Woman” was created.
*deep breath
I used to work with a lady who would always take an interest in my music. She’d ask how our jam sessions went and if I’d recorded anything new. But, anytime I had something new, she’d listen to it through, and then tell me that it’s “not her kind of music”.
It always bemused me that she would take such an interest if she didn’t like what I was making. One day, I decided to write her a song that she would enjoy.
Music was being streamed at work all the time, so I knew what sort of songs she was into. Classic Rock. Australian Pub Rock in particular. She was a single mum in her 50’s, a strong, hard woman, an Aussie battler.
I wrote Proud Woman in a weekend, and recorded it at home. My friend Reid, who I used to regularly jam with, did the vocals. When it was done, I uploaded it and shared it with her when I got to work. She liked it.
The experience taught me the value of an audience of one. The focus on writing a song for one person, with the aim that they - that person in particular - enjoys it, gave me a different perspective on the whole creative process.
This song is also the only song in which Reid did the lead vocals, my close friend who left us last year to hang out with Bowie, Lemmy, and Mercury.
Buy a copy for yourself today on #Bandcamp!

I remember when I was a boy, I went to work with my father. A small team of men on mountainous terrain in thick Australian bush were selecting trees to be felled for use as railway sleepers. The trees were “snigged” from the scrub by a guy on this four wheeled machine that seemed to defy gravity on the sides of the steep hillsides who dragged them to a clearing for processing. They’d have massive saw blades on giant contraptions that they pushed around to cut the logs into shape. When we stopped for “smoko” a “billy” was boiled over an open fire. Everyone had a tin pannikin and a teabag which they filled with water from the billy. A quarter piece of lemon was handed out for anyone who wanted to add it to taste. That was the best tea I’ve ever had. I must’ve been about twelve years old.

Wrote out a life story just as an excuse to switch (back) to Mac.
I could’ve just said “Bootcamp” but I can get a bit nostalgic and wordy at times.

I have a blog. I would say I had a blog, because the last entry was in 2017. It goes back to 2006!! I’m surprised it’s still there. I would probably consider posting to it again, but it’s on Blogspot and I’ve begun resisting Alphabet services recently. Still, interesting to look back on those times. It was a personal space filled with personal experiences. Many of my opinions and thoughts about things have changed since then. I was running my own Videography business at the start of the blog, mostly wedding videos, but some news stories too. It goes over my switch to Mac, forays into Linux and Solaris, scuba diving, scam calls, Windows issues, my earliest brushes with politics… just stuff I was doing. Not really sure why I stopped blogging. I think Mastodon provides that outlet nowadays, but it lacks the same permanence. I think my first Mastodon posts are already gone, fallen off the end of some social media conveyor belt. I’m okay with that. The alternative is massive server farms sucking down a massive amount of electricity. So the blog will stay untouched. If you want to browse some pre-#DgarMusic #DgarLore you can find the blog at https://dgar.blogspot.com/

@craige
The title of that novel inspired the title of this song. I even have a plectrum with a Darth Vader graphic on it on the sleeve artwork. The song has nothing to do with that novel or Star Wars though.

Yeah, definitely missed out on the whole Amiga thing. I went straight from C64 to System 5 and stayed on Macintosh until Doom and Duke Nukem 3D enticed me to PC. Had a few friends with Amiga 500, but no other experience with CBM. Why would I? System 7 was amazing! 🤩 Reid got right into the Amiga scene, but I met him about the same time as we were both getting into Doom on PC. IPX Deathmatches FTW. 🙌

2020: Started recording original songs and uploading to Soundcloud to a positive reception. Original project was to grab people I had worked with in the past and record something with them. Recorded a few songs with Reid playing some bass and guitar parts on various tracks, and he sung Proud Woman. Recorded one song with Kaaren which Reid also played some guitar on.
2021: Worked on some music solo after having some difficulties with arranging recording sessions with others. Undertook the massive task of learning Blender to make the Space Pop music video.
2022: Lost job. Lost a ton of project files from a computer crash. Attempted and catastrophically failed to assemble a band to take #DgarMusic to the live scene. Ended up deciding that if Harry Nilsson can write songs without ever performing live, so can I. Got some part time creative work. Then #Dgar joined Mastodon.
2023: Told awful jokes, posted terrible memes, and promoted my music on Mastodon. Met amazing Fedizens and connected with incredible musicians, songwriters, and artists. Got played on underground online radio stations, created my own hashtags, and grew my audience.
2024: Wanted to get back into recording, so my New Years Resolution was to write a song a month. Did my first collaboration with an artist from another country (@Onj) which was awesome. I ended up breaking my new years resolution after six months and six new songs after family tragedy struck thrice. My mother passed away, and a few weeks later, we lost my older sister in a traffic accident. The stress of all this may have been the reason my younger sister then presented with “Functional Neurological Disorder”, or #FND. Thankfully she is on the road to recovery now, although that road seems very long and difficult. I’m currently dabbling with some YouTube projects while I get my songwriting mojo back, namely #CillasGarden, and a #Valheim Let’s Play.
Future: I’m having trouble writing songs at the moment - I’m not in the right headspace, I guess. I’m jotting down ideas here and there, but I’m also toying with the idea of working on some sort of album. I really want to do a #Satisfactory Let’s Play when 1.0 drops next month too. I also have to figure out how to get more people to listen to my #music because the stats would suggest only about 1% of the people following me have ever played one of my tracks. The stats are on the right trajectory though which, I hope, is an indication that I’m doing something right.
Once again, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who enjoy my work and share this journey with me. Your support has kept me going, even when all I wanted to do was give up.
Big love. Forever grateful.

My Mastodon journey began when I tooted Hello World on November 30, 2022. Since that time I’ve tooted, and I’ve boosted. I’ve met amazing people, and connected with fellow musicians and artists. I’ve shared my interests and my music. I have learned much from the community.
Although 2024 has been liberal with the knocks and blows, I try my best to be thankful for the good things that have happened.
Did you know that some people know the words to my songs? That still blows my mind.
Thank you for following. Really. I mean it. Thank you. I know I don’t reply to every comment, and when I do, it’s often just an emoji, but I value your company, your insights, your come-backs. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. It’s been my privilege.
I never imagined I’d have ten thousand followers.
You humble me.
Thank you.
Thank you for making the Fediverse the friendly and welcoming place that it is. You’re all amazing.
Big love.
Jon

#Dgar mutters under their breath about how useless corporate advertising is… ugh, they didn’t even mention anything about the Zombie song I wrote for #Fedivision… or that #Dgarheads can vote DIZZ when voting opens on Sunday to support the #DgarMusic entry!
Useless I say, utterly useless!!
