Progress is being made in the world of #DgarMusic with eleven tracks out of twelve being pretty much done and ready for the album. One last song to record bass and vocals on, then a whole lot of reviews and tweaks to everything so it all fits together on the album nicely. Oh, and I have to make some album cover art...
Hopefully it will get released before Steam Frame comes out, otherwise it may take a lot longer, because I still haven't figured out how to make music and play games at the same time.

It’s 3:30 am and I’ve just finished recording the guitar track for a tune that wandered into my head at 1:30 am.
Melodies often visit in the middle of the night just before I drift off to sleep, but I’ve never been able to remember them when I wake up. I got this one though, and I like how it sounds.
I hope it still sounds good in the morning.

My first published music track, five years ago today.

Song writing can be a bit of a process sometimes. How a song is first written and the forms it takes as it's being worked on can be a far cry from where it ends up. Here's an example I stumbled upon while looking for something else in the D'gar archives; the first recording of a new song that I had just written to present to the couple of guys that I would often collaborate with.

The #Fedivision song competition had been an annual event on the Fediverse for several years. In 2024, #Dgar entered this song, All Zombies Go To Heaven, which contained references to religion and some have suggested it was commentary on modern conservative politics and right-wing culture. Whether this was intentional or not, the Fedivision song contest was canceled and would never be held again.
It’s #BandcampFriday today and All Zombies Go To Heaven is now available on #Bandcamp so you now have the opportunity to own a copy of this piece of Fedivision history.

#BandcampFriday has arrived!
I have told this story on here before, but this is my first Bandcamp Friday, so I’m going to tell it again. It is the story behind how my song “Proud Woman” was created.
*deep breath
I used to work with a lady who would always take an interest in my music. She’d ask how our jam sessions went and if I’d recorded anything new. But, anytime I had something new, she’d listen to it through, and then tell me that it’s “not her kind of music”.
It always bemused me that she would take such an interest if she didn’t like what I was making.One day, I decided to write her a song that she would enjoy.
Music was being streamed at work all the time, so I knew what sort of songs she was into. Classic Rock. Australian Pub Rock in particular. She was a single mum in her 50’s, a strong, hard woman, an Aussie battler.
I wrote Proud Woman in a weekend, and recorded it at home. My friend Reid, who I used to regularly jam with, did the vocals. When it was done, I uploaded it and shared it with her when I got to work.She liked it.
The experience taught me the value of an audience of one. The focus on writing a song for one person, with the aim that they - that person in particular - enjoys it, gave me a different perspective on the whole creative process.
This song is also the only song in which Reid did the lead vocals, my close friend who left us last year to hang out with Bowie, Lemmy, and Mercury.

I have a blog. I would say I had a blog, because the last entry was in 2017. It goes back to 2006!! I’m surprised it’s still there. I would probably consider posting to it again, but it’s on Blogspot and I’ve begun resisting Alphabet services recently. Still, interesting to look back on those times. It was a personal space filled with personal experiences. Many of my opinions and thoughts about things have changed since then. I was running my own Videography business at the start of the blog, mostly wedding videos, but some news stories too. It goes over my switch to Mac, forays into Linux and Solaris, scuba diving, scam calls, Windows issues, my earliest brushes with politics… just stuff I was doing. Not really sure why I stopped blogging. I think Mastodon provides that outlet nowadays, but it lacks the same permanence. I think my first Mastodon posts are already gone, fallen off the end of some social media conveyor belt. I’m okay with that. The alternative is massive server farms sucking down a massive amount of electricity. So the blog will stay untouched.
