  1. Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Models

    ”AI models released under open source license without original training data or program" are not seen as DFSG-compliant.”

    ”Disclaimer ... releasing useful AI models under permissive licenses ... is a generous act ... On the other hand, DFSG sets a pretty high standard ... to create a free operating system, where the "free" means "software freedom"“

  6. Edit: Outdated; AUP removed, see downthread

    @fraggle @Andres4NY @hailey #DFSG clause 6 means that any software packaged for #Debian guarantees your right to watch porn. However, if this is now the case, it seems likely to me that new releases of #Firefox will no longer be able to be packaged for Debian.

    It also means that Firefox is also no longer #FreeSoftware by the #fsf 's definition, as it no longer meets Freedom 0 - "The freedom to run the program for any purpose".

    Sad, sad day. 😢

  11. Thanks @richardjh, that's the first link I would have shared. Also;

    But @ramsey there's also the Open Source Initiative's Definition (OSI OSD);

    opensource.org/osd

    Those same four freedoms are all there. Just in different words, based on the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), originally drafted by Bruce Perens;

  15. @lenzgr I don't think it's good though since both BSL is not #FreeSoftware license according to #DFSG (Debian Free Software Guideline) or #OpenSource according to #OSI.

    I think someone don't like with this will fork the last MPL-licensed #MariaDB version to keep the MPL license though; individuals, organizations and companies prefer #FOSS will move there and #HashiCorp will realize their terrible decision.

  19. One of the reasons I oppose "free software" licenses, that try to limit fields of endeavor, such as "no military use", is the amazing creativity of humans in always finding new ways to harm people.

    #FreeSoftware is probably used in many of the horrible examples in that documentation.

  20. @Suiseiseki It is incorrect to say that #Debian changed the #DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines) around firmware. Please see choice 5 at debian.org/vote/2022/vote_003 . Rather, Debian amended the social contract to permit firmware blobs in the installer, enabled only when they are required, and informing the user. Much discussion happened; people CARED about all 6 options. The vote shows not everyone liked the winning option. 7/

  25. @Suiseiseki Every new package introduced into Debian undergoes rigorous license review by the "FTP master" team. They scan through the package, looking for binary blobs, copyright notices in source files that upstream may not have noted in their LICENSE file, licenses that aren't DFSG-compliant, etc. This introduces friction in Debian, because the review can take weeks, but #Debian has kept it for all these years because of how deeply we care about #FLOSS and #DFSG. 3/

  30. @Suiseiseki #Debian has a Social Contract with the #FreeSoftware community. debian.org/social_contract Debian promises to be 100% free as defined in the #DFSG, to give back to the community, to not hide problems, etc. It also says there are "contrib" and "non-free" areas for software that doesn't meet the #DFSG but is distributable. 22 years ago, I proposed removing non-free. debian.org/vote/2000/vote_0008 Spirited discussion ensued, but non-free remained. People on both sides of that debate CARED! 2/

  35. @Suiseiseki "#Debian doesn't care about the #DFSG" is absolutely false, and it is important we discuss why. I have been a Debian developer for over 25 years and I, along with thousands of my peers, care deeply about #FreeSoftware and the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

    To say "I disagree with you about a corner case" is far different than "you don't care". Please refrain from attacking people in that way again. People may care deeply, yet disagree slightly. 1/

  40. @Suiseiseki I don't read it that way at all. Anyhow, I am quite certain Debian wouldn't have adopted it or had an ongoing effort to package it because if those terms were really true, it would fail the #DFSG.
