I am happy with #labwc.
I have configured the titlebar with double left click to iconify and middle click to lower, xfce4-panel as vertical #deskbar with intelligent autohide.
I use "Run or Raise" with single key shortcuts for most used applications.

EDIT: I have to remark! THIS IS a super-dumbed-down version of what #Endeavor can do. I mean, it's decked out as #KDE

I can't rem how to use those desktops.

looks like mate to me! i dunno. but i have #deskbar auto-collapsing at right - fancy stuff back in 2007 or so! reminds me of my 00's desktops! i hate icons.
