#Economics - I do not understand you at all.
[Another toot (sorry, I have now lost it) sent me to this thing:
https://www.commsec.com.au/content/dam/EN/Campaigns_Native/stateofstates/October2023/CommSec_State_of_the_States_October_2023.pdf]It is a ranking of the '#Economic Performance' of the eight Australian states, written by professional economists at #CommSec.
It ranks the economies using eight measures. These measures imply eight axes that somehow(1) locate each state in some kind of #economic space. Somehow(2), each position in this eight-space is assessed and somehow(3) the headline "Victoria is now Australia's best performing economy" is derived.
The report implies that (I suppose) abs(i1 ... i8) is some kind of number of times Victoria ranked in the top three in each indicator:-
"Victoria was consistently strong across all indicators". But no precise function is presented. Fine. It is a populist report. You can't always footnote everything.Q: What would be your idea about how/which #indicators should be measured?
A: Did you say "inflation"? Nup. That one doesn't count, it's in "other indicators" and is not formally included.
Did you say "wage growth"? No, that's "other" as well. How about "Home Prices"? no, not that one neither. This feels a lot like baloney. When words are this slippery, the authors are trying to mislead, misdirect, or dissemble. I have to ask why? Why are the authors doing this?
My feeling: There is no such thing as "Economic Performance" there is no such thing as a "Strong" Economy. There is no such thing as "The Economy" - it does not exist.
#Economics? Yep, sure, that exists. #TheEconomy? It's no more real than The TARDIS, and it's a lot less relevant to my daily happiness.
