Productive

In my last post I berated myself for not being productive when I had the chance before work. Well, folks… who is failing to be productive now? Who just fixed the clogged drain in the bathroom sink?

It was me! It was totally me!

You can’t see this, but as I type this I am emphatically patting myself on the back. Yeah, look at me being all plumbery and shit. I snaked the hell out of that drain and fixed it like a boss!

Of course, 20 minutes later I shaved for the first time in about two weeks so… yeah, it’s probably clogged again. Oh well, I will enjoy my self inflicted accolades while I can.

It’s 9:00 now, so let’s punch in and get some real work done!

When I poured in that first gallon of hot water — *whoosh*! I poured in another gallon of hot water for good measure, then followed up with a regular flush just to be sure everything was back in action. I was surprised how well it worked, and just wanted to share in case it might help someone else!

Pour in a healthy dose of liquid dish soap (we had Dawn), like a cup or two. Let that just sit for about five minutes. Then pour in lots of hot water — I used a gallon pitcher that I filled from the hot water spigot in our tub. You could heat water on the stove, but you just want it hot, not boiling. I think our water heater is set around 125°F, if that gives you an idea, and you probably want it below ~150°F.

I searched and read a few articles for ideas. A lot of them involved baking soda and/or vinegar. One tip had you combining baking soda, epsom salts, and dish soap in muffin tins to make a sort of bath bomb. I decided to start with one of the simplest ideas, and it worked first try: Dishwashing liquid and hot water.

Using a plunger didn’t seem to help. A professional-strength drain cleaner (lye-based) didn’t work. I tried using a drain snake, but the one we have is really made for sinks and showers, not toilets, so it wouldn’t go through the U-bend to reach wherever the problem was.
