The OSA has created a market for information about circumventing state safety controls, just like in Iran, China, etc… except that we have free speech. The result will be a government war on information:
Age verification advocates in government warned they would be severely punishing any “platforms” that hinted using VPNs to circumvent age verification controls.
They did not understand that third party publications would begin aggregating “Which”-style lists of “top 10 age verification circumvention-hassle tools”, advertising those lists everywhere as a resource/for clicks.
So what are they going to do now? Ban people from talking about how to circumvent age verification? Drive the teenagers and everyone else even further underground, in pursuit of “perfection” rather than “good” – compare this from 2019:
“The Secretary of State should not make the perfect the enemy of the good when it comes to child protection, especially after so many assurances have been given by the Government that once the privacy issues have been dealt with, and they now have been, these regulations would be brought into law. For the Government to renege on its commitments in this important area is a very retrograde step, and I urge my Honourable Friend and the Secretary of State to think again.”

I'm not sure how I missed these actually being passed and given assent. It's not a full repeal of the user/consumer-hostile anti-circumvention law, but between them they allow diagnosis, repair, and interoperability between systems. It also explicitly lets you do it for someone other than yourself, which is critical - existing exceptions have generally only meant you could break DRM for yourself, meaning 99% of people could never do it.

It connects the dots between anti-circumvention copyright laws like the USA's Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) (and the Canadian copycat legislation) and the enshittification that ensues when Big Tech does ... well, practically anything. There's a specific example he uses that is horrifying. He also shows exactly how Big Tech has escaped what he identifies as the usual four factors for keeping the worst instincts of companies in check.
I agree with him that we should annul the anti-circumvention law on the books, and would go further in saying that we should explicitly enshrine in law the rights to alter, repair, remove etc. any functionality of products and services that we choose to use. I was one of the original 6,000 Canadians who submitted comments warning against the implementation of these restrictions to our government at the time, and my feelings in support of this are stronger than ever.
