  1. It’s #Chemistree season! Here’s one I made back in 2016. The use of an upside-down pear-shaped flask as a tree topper was, in retrospect, an unfortunate choice…

  2. This year's #Chemistree, made by the science prefects. A range of pHs with UI, lots of fun with fluorescein, some density layered stuff, a Tollens silvered flask, and cherry and clove oils with wooden splint wicks, so the back of the lab now smells a bit like Christmas pudding. And fairy lights, cos PHYSICS.

  3. Just realised none of these include the "star" at the top, which is just a print out, but maybe in the next few weeks I'll acquire a few black and white baubles and go at it with a hot glue gun.

  4. Another #Chemistree post because it's done now, with a few extra flasks to bring it up to 100 items.

  5. With the exception of a few final touch-ups and maybe adding the fake snow under it, I think that's the Christmas Tree done this year.

  6. I might be leaving Chemistry, but going out with a bang. Or perhaps with a crash and the shattering of a lot of glassware if this goes wrong.

As with last year, the theme is "You do not talk to Health and Safety about the Christmas Tree". Hopefully finished and lit by the end of the week.

  7. #SFUScience staff and faculty are heading to our annual holiday party this afternoon. In the meantime, please enjoy the view of this year's #SFUChemistry #chemistree created by SFU's academic glassblower Lucas Clarke. #SFU #chemistry

  8. The #Chemistree is done and coloured using universal indicator.

  9. Unintentionally giving the #Chemistree 6-fold symmetry to make it look like a snowflake.

Sorry, unintentionally? Intentional. That's design. I meant to do that from the start... honest.

Next step is to fill the flasks. Worked out that it's just over 12 L of coloured water needed...

  10. Started work on this year's #chemistree today.

We're back to a theme of "You DO NOT talk to Health and Safety about the Chemis-tree".

  11. Since today is the official observed holiday for Christmas, this isn't late! One of my friends working on her chemistry PhD in the Netherlands made her own Chemistree!

  12. The Christmas countdown is ON! Got yourself a Chemistree? Take a picture and tag us! We'd love to see your creativity! 🌲🎄

  13. Time of this year’s #Hull #Chemistry #Christmas lecture, with @Rhodium103 & me.

Smart materials demos a plenty, all nicely wrapped up beneath our pH indicator #chemistree

  14. The 6th Year's #Chemistree is up. Various indicators and weak acid/bases, fluorescein, layered densities, some Tollens' silvered baubles and it smells of clove and cherry due to some essential oils and wicks.
And their own glassworked letters with the school initials.

  15. The #chemistree for 2022 is now done! Our Instagram followers voted for rainbow gradient over red and green (which would have been so much easier...) so I have to respect that, obviously.

  16. Are you thinking of sciency 🧪⚛️⚗️🧑‍🔬👩‍🔬 decoration for your #Chemistree 🎄?

    I have just uploaded a #MolecularCage model at @thingiverse for 3D printing!
