  1. Dear scientists: You should have ONE concept per side.

Having a structural diagram, a crystal structure, an electron density map, crystal parameter information AND a *rotating animation of your active site* is TO MUCH.

  2. Best result of a talk I've ever heard "That's amazing. Please contact the American Union of Crystallography for more funding"

  3. Response to a question: "This lets me advertise the supplementary commentary for the paper, which is about twice as long as the paper"

Response to the next question: "If you download the supplementary commentary you will see a picture of [details omitted] and why [long dead author] was wrong"

  4. How much you want to bet every trans girl at #IUCr2026 is at this talk? "Adaptability of α∙∙∙π recognition motif in cocrystals with progesterone-like steroids: from PAHs to coordination compounds"

  5. Ok they got some after the first one from the moderator. #IUCr2026 #RealTimeChem

  8. You could condense this a lot if you only gave the strictest set of rules, rather then having to present Ground, Air and various size categories for labelling.

  9. Blurrrrrrrr. I don't now how you are supposed to get through this Transportation of Dangerous Goods safety training in only 2.5 hours. I'm at hour four due to the number of breaks I'm taking and my brain still feels like mush.

  10. The smell inside is starting to drop off, it's still pretty nasty outside though. We've poured so many buckets of water over the affected area, then squeegeed them to the storm drain, and moved everything out of that area.

All the people who were not here first thing in the morning are still complaining about the smell, and everyone who was is talking about how much better it is

    #RealTimeChem

  11. We are just dumping buckets of water on where the leaky boxes of crab shells were, it's doing a lot to lower the amount of smell. We're also using a giant squeegee to push the water down the drain, which seems to help even more.

I figure a drain system right beside a ginormous lake will not have any trouble handling A. shockingly small amount of juice (for the amount of smell it puts off) from rotting marine animals

  12. I have put in a ticket with custodial, only for it to be closed with a notification that they don't do anything outside of buildings and to contact facilities.

I have now put in a ticket with facilities and marked it as emergency since people are literally fleeing the labs.

I saw one person enter the engineering hallway immediately pull the shirt over their nose and walk back out. I saw another person putting Kim wipes up his nose to filter the smell.

    #RealTimeChem

  13. And for anyone wondering, yes. 3M 60926 cartridges work wonders at keeping dead crab smell out of your nose.

They don't help with your eyes, itching and watering from the smell though.

    #RealTimeChem

  14. The worst smelling area outside now is directly under the air intake, so I'm now contacting custodial and asking them to come and hose down that whole area in an attempt to remove the crab juices on the pavement.

    #RealTimeChem

  15. I have now dragged all of the tarps of crab shells away from the air intake, moved all of the decaying boxes of crab shells away from the air intake, and used a bucket of water to try and rinse down the leech juices, but this has only lowered the smell near the air intake, not removed it.

    #RealTimeChem

  16. I made sure the undergrad in charge of this project knew where the buildings air intake was, but she have forgot to account for the wind when picking a location to spread the tarps out.

So the entire engineering hallway, labs and all smells of a scent best described as a mixture of manure and rotting seafood

  17. MotherFUCK, we've been having an issue with a bunch of boxes of crab shells rotting from a mixture of moisture and heat.

The smell was entering the building and making the whole way incredibly unpleasant to be in, so I told the group they need to get those dried out and put into watertight containers.

  18. CW: Gross, #realtimechem

A PI forgot to buy the waterproof containers his students were asking for, so the crab shells he was storing outside got wet, and now have a smell best described as unholy and are full of maggots

  19. "Hi (Canageek)

We are aware of the explosion, and it was set off by the Rocketry Club without any communication with the University. "

Is just a lovely email to get first thing in the morning.

(We had someone show up at my building claiming to be deaf in one ear and concussed due to an explosion on campus three night before, so I referred her to health and safety and sent them an email to let them know she was coming)

  20. MOTHERFUCK.

I just lost a critical pin for one of my x-rays, when I lost control of a spring while trying to reinstall it.

  23. Huh, the International Union of Crystallography is raising their national membership fees by 10%

This is the first fee increase since *checks notes* 1993‽

Okay, yeah, it would make sense. their expenses have gone up a little in the past *33 years*.

Edit: As I recall membership is about $3000 USD per seat in the General Assembly, Canada pays for three seats.

  24. Turns out the probably 10-15 year old 20 L drum of THF that seems to have never been opened but still looks to be no more than 1/2 full is, in fact, peroxide free! #realtimechem #lablife

  25. Then securities first aid people needed someone to open the door for the paramedic so I went back outside and waited for them. That took forever but I had some nice time filling in the university safety people on what was going on while waiting

    #RealTimeChem

  26. What happened: Student got MnO2, carbon black and isopropyl alcohol in their eye. Went to washroom to wash it out, lab manager got them to eyewash and got me, I called security and then while waiting outside to escort them to the lab, called the department safety guy, who called the university safety people (or security did?)

Then I printed it the MnO2 and carbon black SDS as they were having trouble finding them and made sure they would go along with him wherever he wound up.

    #RealTimeChem

  27. I do not get why people keep coming to me in emergencies.

All I do is go "Have you used $emergency equipment" and pushing the button to summon campus first aid.

And yet it keeps happening! YOU CAN PUSH THE CALL FIRST AID BUTTON YOURSELF! IT'S RIGHT THERE
