  1. It's plausible that parts of the Sierra west slope and crest could see one of their top 5 snowiest 1-2 day periods on record with inbound Fri-Sat storm. That's pretty extraordinary given the very slow start to snow season in many spots. Quite some whiplash! #CAwx #CAsnow t.co/cavqRxCj5J

  2. California's snowpack, the deepest on record in more than 70 years, contains about 30 million acre-feet of water (more water than Lake Mead), per the Los Angeles Times analysis of snow sensor data. ❄️💧

  3. Now also hearing reports of extreme snowfall-related emergencies in higher mountains of SoCal (as well as NorCal). Some folks have been trapped in their homes for days, some without electricity, & there are also reports of structural collapses due to snow loading. #CAwx #CAsnow

  4. Based on growing number of reports from Sierra, where lives have become increasingly disrupted by successive extreme snowfalls--including impassable roads, power/heat outages, avalanches, & roof collapses--outlook (i.e., yet more heavy snow) is increasingly daunting.#CAwx #CAsnow

  5. As clouds finally clear this AM over NorCal, the remarkable extent of low-elevation snowpack (down to 1,500 feet or lower) is readily apparent. The blue lines represent my approximate estimate of current snow extent in NorCal (SoCal still cloud covered). #CAwx #CAsnow

  6. Well, I think this is one prediction that ended up pretty close to reality, given the often spectacular images and footage that emerged from late last week into this weekend (including in SoCal!). #CAwx #CAsnow

For perspective, my current view is that just about any place in the "yellow or higher" areas on this topographic contour map of California (i.e., ~900-1000ft) has a decent shot at accumulating snowfall ove…

  12. Meanwhile between power outages and balloons the NWS Bay Area forecast: Probability for snow covered peaks across the Bay Area and Central Coast increasing for mid-to-late week! For most of us who live in the lower elevations, be prepared for windy, cold and wet weather conditions from Tuesday through Friday. #CAwx #BayAreaWX #CAsnow #snow #wind

  14. Update NWS California-Nevada RFC! The state of CA snowpack on January 11 is now at 102% of the April 1st avg (typical date of the peak snowpack). Also, the state now sits at 226% of avg for this date and is higher than the snowpack trace of 1982-1983 in all 3 sections of the #Sierra! #CAwx #CAsnow

  15. Epic snowfall rate reported in #California’s Sierra Nevada by UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab (@UCB-CSSL) on Dec 31.

MASSIVE STATISTIC: Official #snowfall rates of 7.5" per hour at the lab between 4-5pm today. Snow is light and fluffy.

Onsite researcher recorded the daily 4pm measurement and went back to check accumulation an hour later.
