  1. The forecast said sleet. But I've just had a walk through lovely fluffy falling snow - through the Botanics and Inverleith Park. Utterly beautiful. And, wearing thermals and a thick anorak, very cosy!

I was surprised to see curlews feeding on what must be frozen ground opposite Fettes!

(I did try taking pictures of falling snow, but they were rubbish.)

Now I'm off to the pub!

  2. This is good news! The glass houses have been closed for ages. I bet the ferns that were growing there which I had collected as a student have gone ...!

  3. A stroll through Inverleith Park and the Botanics.

I love the line of trees in Inverleith Park, and they made me seek out a similar but different prospect in the Botanics. Lots of crocuses and daffodils too, though I didn't notice and forgot to look for the famous snowdrops!

I think it was my first visit to the Botanics since Storm Eowyn. There are still many trees down. It's a bit like seeing injured friends.

  4. English biologist & botanical artist Marianne North was born #OTD in 1830.

She was notable for her plant & landscape paintings, her extensive foreign travels, her writings, her plant discoveries & the creation of her gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.

  5. British geneticist and plant anatomist Edith Rebecca Saunders was born #OTD in 1865.

She is best as known as the "Mother of British Plant Genetics": she played an active role in the re-discovery of Mendel's laws of heredity, the understanding of trait inheritance in plants. She also developed extensive work on flower anatomy, particularly focusing on the gynoecia, the female reproductive organs of flowers.

  6. What is Botanical Illustration? Learn About the History of This Scientific Art Form.

Prior to the invention of photography, botanical illustration was the only way of visually recording the world’s many species of plant life. Today, science books are full of highly detailed photographs—typically taken with a macro lens or even a microscope—allowing us to discover the fascinating forms of flora and fauna.

  7. I wonder... if you were to paint a plant, what would you find most appealing?
Because today I'm very fascinated with Venus Flytraps. The shapes, the colors, the teeths...

  11. #Australian #honeybees are one of the most majestic and industrious insects on the planet.

I can watch them for hours. And often do in my travels around #melbourne.

They’ve been active the last couple of months pollinating and feeding, naturally, given it has been the height of summer here in #Australia.

Below are some of my shots of busy #bees doing their thing throughout my travels around this great city. Also some interesting facts about these gorgeous creatures!

Only female honey bees can sting, the males (drones) are not able to sting.

A typical active #honeybee colony may have around 50,000 workers
Honey bees communicate through pheromones.

Honey bees fly up to 25 klm/h (15 mph) and beat their wings 200 times per second or 12,000 beats per minute!

Drones die after mating.

Foraging honey #bees fly about 88,000 klm’s (55,000 miles) collectively, to produce a half a kilogram (approx 1 pound) of honey, visiting around 2 million flowers.

Each honey #bee makes about 1 twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its entire life time 😳

A worker honeybees lifetime? Between 30 - 60 days.

  12. These bees were photographed in #GlenIris #Australia on a #magnolia bush.

    They were ‘busy’ indeed!!

  13. Saw this #magnolia and bees were in abundance!

I watched this one #bee for 5 minutes as it stayed with this flower

Most of the time it seemed to be picking up and placing down the flower’s filaments and anthers (the pieces laying on the bottom petal). Very active, flying

Other #honeybees were flitting in, around and out again per usual

    Super #intriguing

  14. Just had to share this Wild Iris

Walking to the car after coffee, it was calling out from this unkempt front garden in #Prahran, poking through the fence slats saying ‘look at me world’…

    I looked… and I saw.

    Now you have too!

  15. This is known as a ‘Silver Princess’ #eucalypt

Located within the heart of a public space where many indigenous ceremonies are held, in #Southbank #melbourne

Its white / silver fruit (#gumnuts) are the highlight, and yet many of its thin branches exhibit the same shimmer.

    It really is delightful.

  20. Went for a drive with a good friend and her front garden presented with such a beautiful aroma.

These were the source of said delightful smell! 👇

    I present the Portland Rose…

Thinking of contacting #mastodoncentral to request a scratch ‘n smell function.

That’d add a new dimension to social media, hey? 😂😂

  21. This little #gumtree is so unassuming, beaming with pride in its early years in a #Melbourne shopping centre carpark

It’s ‘fruit’; the #gumnut is plentiful, so too it’s new leaves that contain an abundance of eucalyptus oil

I had a little discussion with it. And it kinda went like this…

“Your new trunk is shedding last years cover, as your new bark peels away and falls on the ground to decompose over time. You are self sustaining, as it’ll replenish the nutrients for the soil, which is necessary to your future growth.

Your fruit is in great supply this year, which means you’re abundant in health and of giving to the universe in which you live

And the slender new leaves you’ve grown are testimony to your giving nature. The healing properties of the eucalyptus you produce is a virtuous substance to share with those you grace your presence with; us humans.

Over and above however, you are simply beautiful. You want for nothing, you stand proud in your grace.

I see you… and now others do too

    Be well my new friend”.
