Turns out, enabling particles to render in viewport kills performance.

Without it, I could basically double the size of the simulation.

It looks less ferocious, but also less like styrofoam.

Ok, not really an orrery so much as a concept of the cosmos. This is based on Arrival author Ted Chiang's story "The Tower of Babylon", where the tower of Babel is real and so is a geocentric model of the planets and stars floating in the sky beneath the firmament. They build it, then mine the firmament to break into heaven. It rules.
