  1. Polycystic ovary syndrome (#PCOS) was officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (#PMOS) on May 12, 2026,. This change, published in The #Lancet and announced at the European Congress of Endocrinology, followed a rigorous 14-year global consensus process. The update aims to reduce stigma, improve diagnosis, and accurately reflect the condition's complex, multi-system nature beyond just the ovaries.

This is huge news for women, as it’s estimated that up to a third of women experience some PMOS symptoms. The previous nomenclature meant that many women were not being diagnosed correctly. As a matter of #bioethics of women’s treatment, this is a big sea change. As to how it changes medical professional’s approach, we will have to determine.

  2. In the thirteenth century, Aquinas wrote that story; he sanctified the ownership of land and the serf’s body by the lord as “divine order.” In the twenty‑first century, Yuval Noah Harari takes on the same task. Only this time, God gives way to Data, and divine order to the Algorithm.

🤔🔍 #WearableTech #HumanExperience #Bioethics

  4. Spanish woman dies by euthanasia in case that drew national spotlight

Noelia Castillo, a Spanish woman who sought euthanasia and fought a protracted legal battle with her family over…

  5. So, bioethics and euthanasia. I will preface by saying that my PhD was #bioethics based, and I support autonomous #euthanasia. (Which is to say, I believe people have the right to decide their own destiny, but do not believe the State has that right.)

Right to Die should be as respected as any other personal medical decision. I tell you that story, because an incredibly brave woman, Noelia Castillo Ramos, has fought her father and a bunch of right wing god botherers, the ultra-conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers), in #Spain to be allowed to end her misery.

I respect her Ms Ramos’s decision, and hope that she finds peace in the Source.

  6. The University of Tasmania's RA Rodda Museum kept and displayed 177 human remains without families’ knowledge, report finds

    theguardian.com/australia-news

A coronial probe was launched in 2016 after the museum’s curator raised concerns three specimens had been kept without the consent or approval of the coroner or families involved.

The investigation’s final report, published on Thursday, confirmed 177 samples had been kept by the museum without permission.

  7. Thought provoking essay on anthropomorphism and our interpretation of animal behaviour. Make sure to read the comment section as well.

Clearly, the way in which we ascribe - or identify - animal emotions will help shape our thinking about how we ought to treat them.

Less obviously, revising our views about anthropomorphism might change our thinking about moral responsibility. What are we thinking and doing when we say "Good dog!"?

  8. 🤔 Not what I expected!

More people preferred high diagnostic uncertainty than low, even though the higher uncertainty caused more worry.

  9. The two most recent episodes of #BioUnethical with David Thorstad, Emily Largent, and @GovindPersad were very (very!) good.

Hosts Leah Pierson and Sophie Gibert may be doing reflective discussion better than anyone — outstanding stage setting, questioning, improvising, etc.

Opel et al. argue such equipoise is neither necessary nor sufficient for #SharedDecisionMaking.

Rather SDM is most useful where tradeoffs between options are KNOWN.

Cheers to the authors and the journal for publishing this less-than-encouraging result: doi.org/10.1093/abm/kaae054

Looks like prior (rather than new) beliefs about cancer were the primary predictors of discernment about cancer headlines.

  21. Next was a fantastic discussion/lecture by Rueben C. Warren at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics on population #health, #ethics, #equity, #SocialJustice, and more. This conversation was deep, enlightening, and makes me optimistic for the future of ethical development. Also apparently #TuskegeeUniversity has a bioethics minor, which if you're recruiting folks I would suggest grabbing those students immediately. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=PbMrQ-skG- (3/5)

  22. Next was a breathtaking panel on the responsibility of the #HealthCare field beyond hospitals at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics with Kelsey Berry, Lauren A Taylor, and Rishi Manchanda. The frameworks presented here are applicable to both #tech and #management more broadly, and Manchanda lays down the gauntlet for all of our collective responsibility to improve society. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=IzgA5dFvff (4/9)

  23. Next was an excellent discussion on disparities in #surgery at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics with Douglas W. Hanto, Piroska Kopar, and Theresa Williamson. These bioethics panels are incredibly relevant for other fields, and this one gets at the importance of bringing one's view beyond traditional training to the societal context in which work is situated. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=fQ0nY2spFY (5/7)

  24. First was an insightful panel on #ethics in #surgery #innovation with Richard Whyte, Theresa Williamson, John Mayer, Martin McKneally, and Louise King at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics. Collaboration between academia and industry is as essential as it is problematic, and in the surgical space in particular a variety of factors intersect and are explored here. There aren't easy answers, but great points examined here. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=CHkAs-rHLY (2/7)

  25. First up was an amazing #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics panel on ethical challenges in global #surgery with Bethany Hedt-Gauthier, Rashi Jhunjhunwala, Michelle Joseph, and John Meara. Is it #ethical for surgeons to fly into developing countries for a week, help with surgeries, and then leave? How should surgeons going to those regions involve local medical personnel in their research, and #coauthoring papers? Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=IA8pYHIYV7 (2/6)

  26. Next was a fascinating discussion at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics with John Hick, Darlene Tad-y, Matthew Wynia, Erin Talati Paquette, and Elke Shaw-Tulloch on the #ethics of hospital transfers. This is an incredibly complex topic, one that involves #regulations, professional ethics, #technology, and more. Highly recommend.

  27. Next was a stellar conversation between Monica McLemore and Michele Bratcher Goodwin at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics on ethical and #workforce considerations in abortion care provision. This discussion is pre-Dobbs, but the conversation is prescient and also focuses on how the medical profession should think about #training and #hiring ethical practitioners youtube.com/watch?v=DihA3myNlM (3/7)

  28. Next was a highly engaging talk by @gwagner on the ethics of solar geoengineering at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics. Moral hazards? Inverse moral hazards? Powerful, entrenched industries? This talk has it all. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=c6QLd1HqSR (3/8)

  29. Next was a fantastic group of talks by Jason Delborne, Omar Akbari, and Insoo Hyun on the #ethics and implications of #GeneDrives at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics. The rigor, process, and thought going into not just developing this technology but in engaging with a variety of stakeholders and inclusively advancing (or not) is very instructive, highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=y_Erfg5_kF (3/5)

  30. Next was a fabulous talk by Patricia King at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics on #racism, #inclusion, and #justice in bioethics. This is one of the founders of modern bioethics, and King isn't afraid to question past decisions in the field or push for more meaningful change. Highly recommend, especially for those in tech and management youtube.com/watch?v=KxNEDSxgua (3/10)

  31. First up was an important talk by Susan Miller at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics on how #HoustonMethodist developed their mandatory #vaccination policy. There is so much packed into discussion: organizational #ethics, algorithmic ethics, #management, #transparency... Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=CRKF1GULkA (2/9)

  32. Last was a fantastic panel at the #HarvardMedicalSchool Center for #Bioethics on exceptions to informed #consent with William Feldman, Neal Dickert, and Carrie Sims. The tech community would be wise to listen to how thoughtfully the medical field thinks about consent, and the rich conversation here indicates what it takes to start to do it right. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=JPsLIA9Fd- (8/8)
