The following comment is from @SalutWineWithDavid (can’t find on Fedi), made 2 months ago on The Tech Report interview with Paris Marx re the future of AI & work (YT). Nothing new to those who know but I really appreciate how he summarises so much in just 3 sharp paras:
“Who could possibly imagine a tech industry could experience any losses after gleefully choosing to dive headfirst into large-country-GDP-sized expenses to launch a technology with no identified cost-effective benefit for the marketplace? I mean, I know it can produce software at breakneck pace, half-ass its way through a blueprint and can create AI slop videos in seconds. But is anyone wanting to pay for any of this? It's like buying up the Star Wars franchise and then investing billions to create 800 different Star Wars projects without asking if there are enough people wanting to watch that many new Star Wars shows. Just imagine what a disaster that would be!
“Henry Ford had a bright idea over a century ago to pay his workers more so they could afford that new "car" thing. AI tech bros are usurping the entire wealth of the American populace to create an industry nobody is going to be able to buy, nobody asked for, very few people need, and that an insignificant portion of the public will benefit from in any significant real-world way. People want health care, housing, affordable good food, quality education, a stable income and a secure retirement. Our federal government is literally spending $0 and 0 time trying to get any of that for Americans while rolling out the grift carpet for these billionaire super-villains.
“And in a year everything they're spending $ trillions on this year will fit in a shoebox and cost $100. Thank goodness all it ruined was the water supply, electrical grid, our collective cognitive abilities and the job market.”
Who knew that a substantial proportion (think it was a third) of Millennials admit to having sabotaged AI at their workplaces? Smart people as Paris Marx points out that the main use of similar in the past has been to increase surveillance of workers.
