What Is OpenAI’s Powerful New Deep Research Tool Capable Of?
LawSites: I Use It to Analyze the Legality of President Trump’s Pause of Federal Grants – “Over the weekend, OpenAI released Deep Research, an AI agent capable of completing multi-step research tasks and synthesizing large amounts of online information. OpenAI’s chief product officer Kevin Weil said it can complete complex research tasks in minutes that might take a person many hours or days, according to The New York Times, adding that it should be particularly useful for people in fields such as finance, science and law. Curious to see what it can do, I have been running it through several research tasks today. In search of a meaty legal issue, I decided to ask it to research and analyze the legality of the Trump administration’s temporary pause of federal grant and financial assistance programs, and then to outline the potential legal remedies available to recipients of those grants and financial assistance. In 10 minutes, it produced the following memorandum, which consumes 9,000 words and 17 single-spaced pages in a Word document, and which covers in some detail:

This Site Offers RSS Feeds for Pages That Don’t Have Them
Lifehacker: “Several sites, including Tumblr and Craigslist, have removed their RSS feeds. Other services, like TikTok, never offered an RSS feeds to begin with. This is annoying if you want to follow things without creating an account, the way you can with Bluesky and Mastodon. Even worse: there are even some news sites that don’t offer feeds, which is a problem if you’re setting up an RSS reader and hoping to follow your favorite sites. #OpenRSS is a free service that builds open RSS feeds for various sites. Unlike similar services, this isn’t automated—the team there actively builds and maintains the integrations. The service is run by a nonprofit that is transparent about its financials right on the about page…”

The Most Detailed Map of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution in the US
ProPublica: “It’s not a secret that industrial facilities emit hazardous air #pollution A recent ProPublica analysis shows for the first time just how much toxic air pollution they emit — and how much the chemicals they unleash could be elevating cancer risk in their communities. ProPublica’s analysis of five years of modeled #EPA
data identified more than 1,000 toxic hot spots across the country and found that an estimated 250,000 people living in them may be exposed to levels of excess cancer risk that the EPA deems unacceptable. The agency has long collected the information on which our analysis is based. Thousands of facilities nationwide that are considered large sources of toxic air pollution submit a report to the government each year on their chemical emissions. But the agency has never released this data in a way that allows the public to understand the risks of breathing the air where they live. Using the reports submitted between 2014 and 2018, we calculated the estimated excess cancer risk from industrial sources across the entire country and mapped it all. The EPA’s threshold for an acceptable level of cancer risk is 1 in 10,000, meaning that of 10,000 people living in an area, there would likely be one additional case of cancer over a lifetime of exposure. But the agency has also said that ideally, Americans’ added level of cancer risk from air pollution should be far lower, 1 in a million. Our map highlights areas where the additional cancer risk is greater than 1 in 100,000 — 10 times lower than the EPA’s threshold, but still high enough to be of concern, experts say…” -

The rise of Bluesky, and the splintering of social
MIT Tech Review: “..Last year, we put “Twitter killers” on our list of 10 breakthrough tech. But the tech wasn’t the rise of one service or the decline of another. It was decentralization. At the time, I wrote: “Decentralized, or federated, social media allows for communication across independently hosted servers or platforms, using networking protocols such as ActivityPub,

Make Use Of: “There are many ways to share files between people and devices, but a lot of those methods can be cumbersome by requiring app downloads, account registrations, cloud storage setups, and so on. That’s why we prefer these no-hassle file sharing websites that let you drag-and-drop files and share links to those files so that others can download them right away.”
