Made a marching tune for a fictional 16-bit RPG!

This was quite challenging as it's a very new genre for me. There's other music like this and the composers truly worked some magic in making symphonic music work with FM synths; I can only hope to learn these skills one day.

This latest chiptune piece was meant to be a straight forward electronic synthwave tune to be used as action music, but it went way heavier than expected, so I went with it and made a prog metal boss theme. Making all the different parts was heaps of fun. FM synth actually does ok with distorted guitars. Still sucks for piano 🤦‍♂️

Cover art was drawn while waiting in line at a theme park.

For this track I tried making a horror theme using FM synth; it was quite challenging because I couldn't just layer on big pads with dark reverb and call it a day, so I had to experiment with some tricky techniques.

When developing it I had an idea but it refused to work out, until I gave up and let the piece develop on its own terms, and it all started to come together.

So if your creation doesn't want to obey your vision, let it go and see where it takes you, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I just had a ohhh I get it moment. A few weeks ago I was messing around with #bambootracker. I watched defflemask's video tutorial on #fmsynthesis but couldn't figure out how the ym26xx chip used 7+ sliders instead of the 4 in adsr envalopes. This picture from the #MegaFM manual cleared it up the sliders correspond to the angles on this diagram for the envelope.

If you are not a professional composer, then tools like LMMS / Fruity are appealing. Unfortunately there remains the huge issue of finding good sample sets.

#Chiptunes allow you to use banks of presets and the end result generally sounds more cohesive and retro (if thats what you are going for).
