Ah, not all these Japanese fridge/freezer sized external domestic #HotWater units are #Heatpump #ASHP based - the “Ene Farm” with two massive units is #FuelCell based! See eg https://www.daigasgroup.com/en/rd/topic/1768549_56103.html

Spotted a few upright fridge/feeezer size units outside houses in Japan but plumbed in, often next to the outdoor heatpump fan unit. They’re for hot water as I suspected, using CO2 as the refrigerant for high temps - the Eco Cute CO2 heatpumps (from multiple manufacturers) has sold over 10 million units in its first 24 years on sale!

Looks like the total net I paid for energy in 2025 was (ignoring standing charge)… £11.

I suspect if I bothered increasing the ancient, pitiful 5cm of insulation in the attic I could get that to break even.

Air source heat pumps: they work.

Right now at 23:12 (almost midnight):
Outside temperature: 10 C
Electricity consumption: 0.6 kW
Thermal energy: 3.9 kW

For the whole day:
Electricity consumption: 16 kW
Thermal energy: 77 kW

About 5x heat taken from the outside air. Remarkable.

Some of those 16kW were offset by solar panel production. I wish there was a good equivalent for roof wind turbines to cover Winter and nights; sadly none seem to actually work in the turbulent air around residential buildings.
