  1. @skyfaller i was at many if not most of the #Occupy Oakland general assemblies
I know a lot of the inspiration came from the #APPO, "popular assembly of the peoples of Oaxaca", which was the principal organizing body during the Oaxaca revolt of 2006, which saw police and politicians totaly removed from the territory, radio and television stations siezed and an intricate system of barricades to defend it all. Its worth learning about if you havent already.
The practice of self-management via community assemblies is super old and hundreds, possibly thousands, of communities in Mexico continue to use simular means to manage their societies, as well as trade unions like the cnte.
Anyways, if you have any questions about GA's during #OO ( #nostalgia ), shoot away.

  2. En el marco del 20 aniversario del inicio del movimiento social y popular de 2006 en Oaxaca, recordamos a uno de los sectores que se unió a esta lucha: las Comunidades Eclesiales de Base de las colonias y comunidades de la periferia de la ciudad.

  3. On June 14, 2006, then-governor of Oaxaca Ulises Ruiz Ortiz sent 700 police in a predawn raid to destroy the striking teachers' encampment in the central plaza of the city.

This latest act of repression sparked a widespread revolt that resulted in the people first retaking the plaza and then taking the city and then spreading the rebellion throughout the state.

The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) emerged as the coordinating and decision-making body of the movement. From June to October 2006, there were no police in the city of Oaxaca, with its 600,000 inhabitants.

The governor and his functionaries met secretly in hotels or houses and eventually fled the state. The APPO put into place permanent encampments in all the public buildings and public and private radio and television stations, with important occupations of the media being led by women, who then ran the outlets themselves.

When the governor began to send death squads to carry out attacks against the encampments, barricades were constructed to protect them. More than 1,000 barricades were put together daily in the evening around the encampments and critical intersections, and were taken down each morning to make way for traffic.

Union members of the APPO carried out many services, such as the collection of trash.

On October 29, then-President Vicente Fox sent 4,500 Federal Preventive Police (PFP) to Oaxaca. On November 2 and November 25 they carried out violent attacks to remove the barricades and end the occupations of buildings, ultimately crushing the commune by force.

The PFP arrested 149 people on November 25, many of whom were tortured, denied medical treatment and legal council, and transferred to a prison in the state of Nayarit, 1,000 miles away. From June to November, twenty-six people were killed and many more were tortured and held incommunicado.

While not without its flaws, contradictions, and shortcomings, the APPO represents a powerful example of popular revolt consolidating into autonomous organization on a mass scale.

  4. The African #Energy #Bank will be installed by June 2024. In the meantime, the #battle is raging between the #African #countries to host the headquarters of this decisive structure in the empowerment of the continent which so far is forced to #finance itself elsewhere…

It remains to separate #Nigeria, #Ghana, #South Africa, #Egypt, #Benin, #Ivory Coast, #Libya and #Algeria. According to the #OilPrice #media, with such a #bank, Africa will be able to step up in the global #energy #supply, thanks to #investments that can be #mobilized more easily on the spot.

#Omar #Farouk #Ibrahim, the secretary general of the #Organization of #African #oil #producers (#APPO), the organization that initiated this mega project, has unveiled the criteria that will be taken into account to designate the country that will house the Energy Bank. Mr. Ibrahim indicated, on March 4, 2024 during an intervention at the International Energy Summit in Nigeria, that the winner will have to have suitable premises and have #subscribed to the #social #capital of the bank.

So far Ghana is in pole position but Nigeria, the continent's largest economy, is banging its fist on the table by asserting its status as the leading oil producer in Africa. And what about Algeria, which has just wrested from Nigeria its place as the leading gas exporter; South Africa, the continent's second largest economy; Egypt, which is also a major gas producer and has the confidence of foreign donors and investors. Etc. When we told you that the battle to shelter this siege will be tough.

For all these contenders, the stakes are twofold: More exposure and influence on the regional and international energy market, but also privileged access to large energy investments. We have learned that Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria have been working hard for several months to be designated…
