  1. wow, was für gute Kritik an der japanischen Anime Industrie und natürlich auch um den Erfolg von Donghua.

In Japan geht es um Story Telling, Animationsqualität, Arbeitsbedingung und generell um Anime geschichtlich.

  2. We hear about the anime industry making a lot of money, but why are studios struggling?

It has to do with the production committee system, which the committee gets most of the profits and the studio only get one off production fees to make the show. It’s because the studios most instances are shut out of intellectual property rights, meaning they don’t get any of the money they earn.

This is why studios struggle to make a profit, which of course lead to a talent shortage, low pay, and poor working conditions.

  3. UN Report revealed that the Japanese anime industry will face a potential collapse if there is no reform.

It’s not too surprising given the pay, but also with some anime productions in recent years facing delays and even production collapse. There were quite a few this year, which is a warning sign.

  4. I do wonder if Sakugablog will do a postmortem on Sasayaku You ni Koi o Utau's production as it seems like a special case of mismanagement and various issues. After all, I can't believe one alleged account that is only in English and doesn't seem that trustworthy.

If only more people from the staff that actually worked on the production speak out in Japanese, maybe there can be a full picture of what actually happen. I think everyone should know what actually happened.

That said, the remaining episodes got pushed back two weeks, the production is pretty much messed up which is such a shame. Animation quality issues aside, the story is good, but weighed down by poor animation, like with Märchen Mädchen back in 2018 which had a production that is totally f’d. Given that Yuri-genre anime rarely get a second season, it's sad.

  5. The post is finally updated with rebuttals to OP's points, along with some selected replies. While these allegations seem compelling, but there are flaws to OP's "leaks," especially since the lack of understanding of how the industry works, especially in regards to outsourcing (You will be surprised that known Studios will be in the credits too of the shows you watch).

Now, if we had accounts from people who are working on the project in Japanese that can validate these allegations, it would be more plausible, since we know things are lost in translation.

  6. The production problems with Sasayaku You ni wo Utau isn’t the first, but certainly won't be the last.

We know how disastrous Marchen Madchen's anime production was in 2018. It's a shame that any anime adaptation doesn't get at least a decent production that has a chance to possibly get another installment or sell more copies of the source material.

But instances like these won’t be the last, until something breaks or the workers decide to unionize. This is just not sustainable

While not posted here on the Fediverse, a user on the :deadbird: site has gotten in contact with a user to leak the problems the staff are working with while producing the anime. (Note: Some spelling corrections, source from Patstar_1999, OCR in text form) I may write a follow up editorial post on this over on my main blog at a future date.

  9. I wonder if this is a trend towards streaming and less on physical DVD/Bluray sales.

Not sure how the streaming situation is in Japan in regards to Anime. I wonder if there is more insight of how this might affect home video sales.

  10. Unsurprisingly, people who work in the Anime industry only get paid an average of ¥1111 yen per hour or $7.33 per hour. The average yearly sallary is said to be $16k or ¥16151 per year

NAFCA surveyed 323 anime staff, of which 191 (59%) were animators, with 44 unit directors (13.6%), the latter responsible for a divisible unit of production, such as an opening or ending song, or an entire episode/part of a film. The number also included 35 production staff (10.8%), 27 character/mechanical designers (8.4%), 23 voice actors (7.1%), 20 directors, 15 working in coloring, 14 in art, 14 in cinematography, 11 in CG, 10 in sound and 4 screenwriters. NAFCA's data concluded that the overall median hourly wage was 1,111 yen (US$7.33 per hour), with 14% making around only $5.23 hourly. The income report excluded voice actors for this segment, adding that how voice actors work in the anime industry sets them apart from other professions. The report organizers plan a future survey specific to voice actors in the future.

Sadly, it's not getting any better paywise, besides the amount of hours worked on average per month, in a toot I shared a few hours ago.

  11. In a recent anime industry report, about half the industry workers work over 225 monthly hours.

About half of people in the Japanese anime industry said they work over 225 hours per month, highlighting the long working hours compared with other fields, a recent survey by an industry association showed.

The number greatly surpasses the full-time workers' average of 163.5 hours in the health ministry's survey for 2023, according to the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association.

This is simply not sustainable and we know for a long time the working conditions in the Japanese animation industry is just bad.

  12. Jumping Further Down the Anime Merchandise Rabbit Hole – More Thoughts about Anime Figures and More

Back in 2014, I shared my thoughts on collecting merchandise. Of course, a lot has happened since 2014, when I was in my second year working on my Master’s Degree. A lot has changed since I started working and can afford things.
As a result, since I last shared my thoughts on collecting anime merchandise, some views have changed. But, of […]
