  1. Reader's Log, Supplemental, Week 17/52 for 2024, Stardate 20240425.1018.

I am failing the #52BookChallenge SO HARD, y'all. Not only have I not been sticking to my existing #TBR stack and getting through 1 book each week, but MORE BOOKS HAVE MANIFESTED IN MY TBR STACK! I am doomed. Doomed, I tell you.

  2. Reposting because I broke the thread (argh)! Arsenic and Adobo, by Mia P. Manansala (2021). #TBR #52BookChallenge 3/52

+ Delicious descriptions and fun characters.
    - The mystery itself isn't very complex.
+ Recipes in the back of the book!

Pet peeve: the "girl comes home from the Big City and discovers true meaning when she accepts having to stay in her small hometown," a leetle too Hallmark Christmas Movie.

Will read more in the series.

  3. Arsenic and Adobo, by Mia P. Manansala (2021). #TBR #52BookChallenge 3/52

I enjoyed this book because of the delicious descriptions and the fun characters. Yes, there are recipes in the back of the book. The mystery itself isn't very complex.

My main pet peeve: the "girl comes home from the Big City and discovers true meaning when she accepts having to stay in her small hometown" was a leetle too Hallmark Christmas Movie for me.

  4. Sisters of the Forsaken Stars, by Lina Rather (2022), 2/52 #TBR #52BookChallenge, finished at the cabin, MLK weekend.

This SF novella is all about the *aftermath* of a ship of nuns saving a colony from an intentionally deadly plague (in a previous book). This is very much the second book in a series, full of angst, indecision, grief, and consequences. It really doesn’t stand on its own. Loved the wonder-filled descriptions of the liveships and their biology, though!

  5. Because it took me longer to read that 500 pager, my next #TBR book, 2/52, is a novella! Sisters of the Forsaken Stars, by Lina Rather (2022). Hoping to gobble it up this weekend.

  6. Persephone Station by Stina Leicht (2021)
    TBR 1/52

This is the cyberiest of cyberpunk, with a "first alien contact gone wrong" overlay. Reminded me of CJ Cherryh's action-driven SF and Pat Cadigan's cyberpunk.

A rag-tag crew of enforcers that are as much family as battle-buddies, an immortal, nonbinary gangster boss, an empathetic AGI (artificial general intelligence) newly decanted into a biological body on a mission of mercy. Recommended.

  7. It is possible that I have enough physical books stacked in my TBR to do the full 52 book challenge. 😂😭 I already read more than 52 books per year, but if I limit "counted" books to my TBR stacks, I might feel like I accomplished something meaningful!

  8. I completed the 52 books (one book per week) this year, which makes it the 2nd consecutive year of me achieving the goal!!! I had read 57 books last year but working as a librarian helped. Also one month ago I was at 24 books read so that was UNEXPECTED #52bookchallenge #books #reading #goodreads

Several by Ta-Nehisi Coates such as Between the World and Me, as well as The Water Dancer.

Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler.

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

Nnedi Okorafor had a bunch of great futuristic stories.

    Children of Blood & Bone.

Finding Langston trilogy was good. 3 boys all interacting it drastically different perspectives.

  10. @Kknight213 good for you! Glad they’ve been helpful!

I’m on book #60. Dedicated this year to reading more black authors. All but maybe 3 or so.

Favorite was the Tristan Strong trilogy by Kwame Mbalia. Loved it & my 5yo enjoyed listening to a good portion of it on the way to daycare early in the year. Got him really excited to know you could listen to great books in addition to just reading them.
