    Poor Things (2023)
Based on the novel by Alasdair Gray

Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Content warning: Sexual situations. I'm no prude but they could have been toned down.
That said, I really loved this film.

    The Pale Blue Eye (2022)

A world-weary detective (Bale) is hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet. Stymied by the cadets' code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case - a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe (Melling).

Have I mentioned how period pieces aren't really my thing? The selling point for me here is the cast.
...and maybe I'm a little obsessed with Poe.

    3 Body Problem (2024)

Based on the story by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin.

A fateful decision made in 1960s China reverberates in the present, where a group of scientists partner with a detective to confront an existential planetary threat.

I loved this series. It's an interesting study of the consequences of rash decisions. I may have to check out the book.

    The Watcher (2022)

A married couple (Naomi Watts & Bobby Cannavale) moving into their dream home are threatened by terrifying letters from a stalker, signed - "The Watcher."

This series gets under your skin.
Mia Farrow is the delightfully creepy Pearl, Jennifer Coolidge is Karen - the realtor with a questionable agenda, Margo Martindale and Richard Kind are the boundary breaching nosey nextdoor neighbors, Big Mo and Mitch.

    The Witches of Hollywood(2020)

The figure of the witch has adorned our screens for decades but has anyone ever broke down the construction of the character? Witches of Hollywood explores the archetype of the witch in Hollywood cinema from the 1930s to the present & how it is linked to the social history of female power.
It's interesting to see how the events of the world affected our depiction of the witch character, in pop culture.

    1899 (2022)

Multinational immigrants traveling from the old continent to the new encounter a nightmarish riddle aboard a second ship adrift on the open sea.

I'm not one for period pieces but this is so much more. Just when you think you know what's going on, another twist is revealed. It's like a Twilight Zone with steam punk elements.

    Coma (2019)

After a mysterious accident, a young architect wakes up to a chaotic, physics-defying chaotic dystopian world filled with memories of comatose patients and nonexistent laws of physics, and joins a band of rogue fighters to find an escape.

I love mind bending sci-fi and this certainly fits the bill.

    Pinocchio (2019)

Old woodcarver Geppetto's puppet creation, Pinocchio, magically comes to life with dreams of becoming a real boy. Easily led astray, Pinocchio tumbles from one misadventure to another as he is tricked, kidnapped and chased by bandits.

This is absolutely my favorite production of Pinocchio, save the 1940 Disney classic. Federico lelapi does a spectacular job as Pinocchio.

    All Of Us Strangers (2023)

One night in his near-empty London tower block, screenwriter Adam has a chance encounter with mysterious neighbor Harry, puncturing the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam finds himself drawn back to his childhood home, where his parents appear to be living just as they were on the day they died 30 years ago.

    An unexpectedly moving film.
    Some adult situations.

After twenty-five years Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship.

Pedro Pascal is so friggin charming πŸ₯°

Liv is new to London and when the mysterious Henry invites her to a magical ritual with his friends, she gets involved in a daring game. They find out they can enter other people's dreams, but then the dreams become dangerous.

Though some scenes may be too intense for younger viewers, this is a good family #SciFi -#fantasy film.

War of the Worlds: The Attack (2023)

The adventures of 3 young astronomers and their fight to survive a deadly Martian invasion.

This is essentially the H.G. Wells #SciFi classic told as a young adult road trip mixed with a Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys mystery with some clever lines and creepy aliens. It's a good family film.

Favorite line: "Okay. We may be in conflict, but we're British, Hannah! Let's make some cups of tea!" - Ogilvy

Larry and his three best friends head upstate for a weekend getaway at a haunted house. As they sashay through the dusty corridors, they recount the home's legend from 100 years ago: a murderous woman named Sylvia slaughtered her son and buried him beneath the floorboards. As they later hold a high-spirited seance to summon the sinister Sylvia, they wind up welcoming more guests than they bargained for.

    Rustin (2023)

Bayard Rustin, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., dedicates his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy. However, as an openly gay Black man, he is all but erased from the civil rights movement he helped build.

    Shirley (2024)

The intimate portrayal of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S., and the cost of accomplishment for Shirley herself.
Regina King does a remarkable job as Chisholm. I almost didn't recognize her. She's that good.
Also stars two of my favorites; the late Lance Reddick and the ever charming Terrance Howard.

    Santa Sangre (1989)

A former circus artist escapes from a mental hospital to rejoin his armless mother - the leader of a strange religious cult - and is forced to enact brutal murders in her name as he becomes "her arms".

I avoided this movie for years because I thought it would be too weird. I was right. It's a very strange movie, and that's why I love it πŸ˜…

    Ripley (2024)

A grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s is hired by a wealthy man to bring his vagabond son home from Italy.

I've been a fan of the delightfully charming Andrew Scott since first seeing him as Moriarty in the BBC production of Sherlock. His performance in Ripley is mesmerizing.

    Down Low (2023)

When Cameron learns how inexperienced middle-aged Gary is, he becomes determined to deliver a crash course in queer life. Cameron’s agenda quickly causes the day to take several unexpected turns.

This is a delightfully dark adult comedy.

    Strawberry Mansion (2021)

In a future where the government records dreams and taxes them, a dream auditor gets caught up in the dreams of an aging eccentric.

This movie was a pleasant surprise. It's a brilliant bit of escapism. I had no idea what to expect and that was part of its charm.

    Blow the Man Down (2019)

Mary Beth and Priscilla Connolly attempt to cover up a gruesome run-in with a dangerous man. To conceal their crime, the sisters must go deep into the criminal underbelly of their hometown, uncovering the town's darkest secrets.

This black comedy is all the more delicious with Margo Martindale as Enid Nora Devlin, the madame of the local brothel.

    The Kill Room (2023)

A hitman, his boss, an art dealer and a money-laundering scheme that accidentally turns the assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation, one that forces her to play the art world against the underworld.

Bonus! Look for the lovely Debi Mazar as Kimono, a highbrow critic that can make or break a new artist.

  24. #30MoviesIn30Days Day 7

    Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

    "All Art is Dangerous!"

After paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

I wanted to like this movie. It has all the right ingredients for a fine black comedy but it misses the mark. It's still worth a watch in spite of its flaws, tho. If for no other reason than the cast.

  25. #30MoviesIn30Days Day 6

    The Killer (2023)

A man solitary and cold, methodical and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, the killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target. And yet the longer he waits, the more he thinks he's losing his mind, if not his cool. A brutal, bloody and stylish noir story of a professional assassin lost in a world without a moral compass, this is a case study of a man alone, armed to the teeth and slowly losing his mind.

    Post Mortem (2020)

A post mortem photographer and a little girl confront ghosts in a haunted village after the First World War.

Don't expect The Exorcist. This movie is a creepy, atmospheric slow burn.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

Based on a single chapter, the Captain's Log, from Bram Stoker's "Dracula", set aboard the Russian schooner Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo to London. The film follows the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence on board.

This movie is a delightfully dark thrill.

    Day 3

    #NowPlaying πŸŽ¬πŸŽžπŸ“½

    Paperhouse (1988)

A young girl lost in the loneliness and boredom of reality finds solace in an ill boy, whom she can visit in a surreal dream world that she drew in her school composition book.

The set design and cinematography in this film are just beautiful. Aside from the decidedly 80s soundtrack, Paperhouse feels fresh an imaginative. It's a little saccharine at times but thoroughly worth your time.

    #NowPlaying πŸŽ¬πŸŽžπŸ“½

    Moon Garden (2022)

A comatose five-year-old girl journeys through an industrial wonderland to find her way back to consciousness.

I sat in silence for a few minutes when this was over. To me, Emma's journey represents the process of working thru trauma. It's beautifully done. I've never seen a horror/fantasy movie with so many layers. So much to think about.

This is my new favorite animated flick 😊
