Freedom House has published the 2026 Freedom of the Net report. Global internet freedom declined for the 16th consecutive year, and the shape of the Internet is changing as governments across the ideological spectrum erect new barriers to how people access information and express themselves online. There was some good news, however. Bangladesh notched the largest improvement for the second year in a row as the country carried out reforms in the aftermath of the removal of Sheikh Hasina, whose decade-long rule was marked by expansive censorship and surveillance. The Gambia continued its steady gain in internet freedom since the ouster of its own repressive leader Yahya Jammeh almost a decade ago.
