  1. >172 miles
    >3.3 US gallons of fuel.

Another week, another excellent(-enough) fuel usage

Technically, I could have gone another 100 miles, which would have taken me to about 1/2 full, but I was near Costco right about then, so made my trip count.

  2. A wonderful evening performing "Witches of Galloway" last night. The Mill on the Fleet is such a gorgeous and historic building.

  6. Freezing fog this morning. Storm total 4" (10.16 cm) of rain. I wish we had about 15000 gallons (currently 3900 gals) more rain water catchment. We had to cap our rainwater catchment and put the gutter extenders on... And another storm cycle is incoming later in the week.

  7. If only there was some historical lessons to be learned about over heating molasses in full storage tanks. Maybe they should have asked a Boston historian or anyone from the North End.

  8. The Greenland Diaries: Day 77

Last night, I’m not sure what happened, or why there were people moving through the area in the darkness, but around midnight the shadows were flashing with popping gunfire and small explosions. I followed the sounds of the bullets, and they bounced off of everything in hollow glances and pings. A few even hit the shed. I covered Snowy with my backpack and put her around my chest.

I was so worried that a shot would pierce the shed and split one of us open.

I hugged up so tightly to her, she would lick my face through the backpack as the thunder of distant mortars and rockets threw tree branches everywhere. They sounded hollow and rocky, like skeletons were trying to swallow up the shed and pull it away. A few times I shifted to the other wall and buried us beneath the boxes of supplies and gallons of water.

I heard machines rolling through the streets, hundreds of them. The pavement cracked and moaned against their heavy treads. The grinding was so intense, I thought the earth was going to fall apart and my house, shed, and everything would be swallowed up. It’d be nice to go out that fast. It’d be nice to avoid the shadows and wild claws.

The Drum still beat behind the whirlwind of gunpowder. I stayed still the entire night as the shooting raged. Seldom did I hear a gun or cannon stop firing to reload. It was like they were spending every inch of ammunition on this battle. I know the Unnamed aren’t overt and present when you fight them. I’ve been lucky enough to fight them in close quarters. At a distance, they’re nearly impossible to see, especially in the dark. How could these people fighting them possibly know where they were hiding?

Around four in the morning, they finally stopped their fighting, and the world returned to the Drum and the silence between each beat. There were no illusions or Unnamed sulking around the empty spots of crumbled houses or caved-in walls. I stayed up all night watching them, but there was nothing. Only the bugs brewed about in aimless clouds.

In the morning, I scouted the area for traces of the battle. I looked for bits of fresh rubble, empty bullet casings glittering in the sun, and bits of torn clothes with inky blood beneath their layers. There was nothing though, not a single crater in the ground or pulverized wall from any of the nearby houses. In previous battles, I’d find this debris so fresh, it’d be shedding dust in the sun like wayward dandruff.

There is nothing though, no sign of the previous night’s battle.

I walked around the block three times with Snowy, looking for the smallest, most minuscule remnants of the battle. Nothing moved. Only the trees and sheets of thick grass shook against the breeze. The plants always look like they’re ready to bubble and burst.

I stopped searching in the late afternoon. It had been an illusion. It was all part of some massive trick by the Unnamed and their unseen allies. When I wandered back home with a worried Snowy, I saw the kid from before. He had been following me the entire time, dodging behind the houses like I used to do when I played with Nerf guns when I was his age.

I bet he regrets any imaginary nightmare he played war with now, the apocalypse was too real

“Don’t get tricked by the battle, they’re illusions too,” I yelled, as he ran away from me. I hope he listens. I don’t know why he always runs.

I’m not going to hurt anybody.

  9. This isn't the whole story, but this graphic makes the really important point, that behind low levels of job satisfaction & ongoing health issues, we need to focus on the shift(s) in the economic system, not the changes in jobs (although, unlike this graphic I'd want to argue that these too are significant drivers of people's negative experiences of the world of work & life more generally).

  10. Sleepless night ahead; Dad in hospital again and just 'waiting for the call' anxiety just gnaws at me.
    Will this be *the time*?

  11. I don't know what survives this current phase of the software industry.
I SUSPECT services (yes like Stylo.Bot) which provide safety barriers around AI generated apps will be required. I don't think they exist yet - I haven't seen anyone design one for a desktop app yet for example. 'Secure Harnesses'.

  12. 60,000 'voluntary' redundancies at Microsoft. They're ALL IN on the 'We're an AI host now' idea...when it pops I don't see what will remain of Microsoft after this. They've forgotten their heart it seems. Build good apps, sell them cheap.

  13. Dad being kept overnight in hospital. Always that constant panic at the back of my mind that this is the *last time*.
Will this. be how it all ends?

  14. Dad back in hospital, I'm feeling AWFUL so need to write. Think I'll work more on Moseltlyucid.Relevance, my general purpose RAG(ish) adaptive, predictive recommendation engine. Also apply for jobs that would make me write stupid crud apps.
If (as I feel right now) it's the last thing I ever release it'll be GREAT. No UX...not a 'general use' tool but a framework for a universal recommender engine.

  15. Reminder: we failed to 'Save the Cheeleader'

  16. Crazy week of work completing the SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT series of articles. Now have the post-frenzy depression for a few days.
I need to work to function; it's sad but without work I spin out.

  17. We all died during covid and this is hell.

  18. 'Suwalki Gap' - I predict that'll soon become a word we hear a LOT in the news as Russia pushes it's 'test if Trump will support NATO allies' plan.

  19. It's interesting to see the intellectual controtions and downright criminal activity as the big US AI companies try to defend their turf against open models until they cash out in their IPOs.
Things are accelerating in ways nobody is prepared for. PHP2Shell was thankfully lesser than we all panicked about but expolits are about to experience exponential growth.
The proitection racket that onlly frontier AI models can defend against this 'open model' proliferatio IS the next product. AI driven security arms race...right at the IPO where they have to justify >$1tn valuations.

  20. Seeing a BUNCH of Qwen 3.8 obliterated models being advertised for use in exploit development. This is getting SUPER dangerous… I suspect you don't need an Astra / Mythos to find exploits. Just THOUSANDS of little agentic fleets probing constantly.
What I built Stylo.Bot to defend against really… These are my 'level 5' autonomous attackers I was worried about.

The PHP2Shell exploit is the first… I suspect ANY website not under active patching will be vulnerable as these exploits increase in both complexity and impact in an exponential manner.
Won't be PHP2Shell… WILL be some popular open-source framework getting ripped open… the same frameworks currently drowning under PR hell.
    Interesting times indeed!

  21. RE: flipboard.com/@futurism/future

Of course they are - in the same way any audience segmentation works. People discovering MOST companies have detailed profiles of their users is crazy...
Basically *as soon as you start selling ads you need to sell the advertisers your user profiles - so they know who you have to advertise to*. If you're not paying for a product you ARE the product..

  22. Part 4 in the increasingly ridiculous series… it’s kinda sorta about recommendation systems but really about me trying to explain fairly complex ML concepts in a practical structure.

Part 4 goes into how you plan 'interventions' in a recommendation system, how you characterise and evolve THOSE alongside customer/system characterisations by finding the value of those interventions. Covers concepts like context-bandits, causal inference and adaptive operational control in HOPEFULLY an easy way for a C# dev to follow.

SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT (Part 4): Mind Control – The Subtle Art of Manipulation.

  23. No I didn't write 6 articles last week. I wrote 24 over the past 18 months and I'm panicking that when I run out of money I'll never be able to publish them. It's a fire-sale.

  24. So far 36 hours into the Recommendation series - likely another 3-4 parts. I have another 30,000 words in drafts I need to re-order, reflow and redraft a few times.

I've built a few 'emergent audience segmentation' and recommendation systems over the years but I thought I'd cover how to generalise the 'newer' ML type approach as it's more interesting (and flexible) than any ETL.

    mostlylucid.net/blog/show-me-w

  25. *I'm sneakingly teaching ML concepts through this series, this is essentially a broken down inference system. Inside a transformer / llm this would lead to next token prediction here it's 'will they buy stuff'.
