The year 2026 may be the year I finally make it a priority to read Kurzweil’s book.
You know. Now that we’ve actually crossed the event horizon and it’s too late to reverse course.
Pre-post edit: looks like I’d have to decide which book I’d want to read. He has at least 3 now.

@ernstdemoor @stux I’d been searching for such a phrase, and LLM (Large Language Model) is a bit too wordy and technical. I discovered “agentic AI”, which maybe isn’t technically a 1:1 replacement, but seems to do the job most of the time.

What should a person do when they are typing up a Mastodon thread, and it's already almost 400 words before you've started to wrap it up? I estimate this will be over 5 posts.
I need a blog. I doubt I will get any readers or subscribers, but at least I can use it as a journal. Hopefully my Fediverse followers would open a link with a good enough teaser.
Followers, what are you doing when you want to post something long?

TIL: "Naturally infected animals do not show any clinical signs of disease [Trichinellosis], except in rare instances, even though they can reportedly harbor 1,000 parasite larvae per gram of muscle tissue."

I see Google Fiber now offers a fiber plan labeled as "8 gigabits per second".
What in the world would someone need that much bandwidth for? I get that having super-fast internet speeds means things like cloud storage is more useful, reducing the need for local storage, but what kind of use case would have 8 Gbps be significantly better than their lowest speed, 1 Gbps?
Their example is a 4k movie would take 2.4 minutes at 1 Gbps, which seems more than adequate to me.

If you are looking for a breezy, easy-to-watch show, Workin' Moms isn't it. This show really leans into tragic comedy at times.
MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER: the abundance of morally ambiguous characters and situations makes it hard to watch at times. Lionel may be the only character I love. More than once, I had to stop watching for a bit because a character or plotline left me upset enough that I needed a break.

I started watching Workin' Moms (2017) this week; I'm about midway through Season 3 now. Very funny from the perspective of several married, working mothers. I would call it a "modern sitcom", meaning it is less formulaic, less laugh-out-loud funny, less punchlines & absurdity, more about the humor (often tragic) in everyday situations and conflicts.
The women's perspective helps keep the show original and interesting.

Some guy 10 years ago moving our data platform to cloud with massively parallel processing: this will be awesome, cheaper, faster, no drawbacks!
Me 10 years later: I have to explain the stack of reasons, including massively parallel non-deterministic-sequencing processing, to someone without a CS background, why I need to use a tolerance when comparing the results of calculations that have 5 to 500 steps before producing the result.

A fun trick I learned recently is Scooter Software's Beyond Compare can be used to extract many archive files such as RAR and 7z without requiring additional software to be installed.
Beyond Compare can treat an archive file as a directory, and it allows copying files from one directory to another. Voila.

To clarify, I would state some basic principles for semiconductor computing:
1. Computers are based on binary. 0s and 1s are represented by high/low voltages.
2. Engineers design complicated devices by arranging huge numbers of simple components.
3. One main component of circuitry used for calculation & storage are transistors — electrically controlled switches.
4. Computer transistors, diodes, etc. are built with thin layers of semiconducting metals on silicon base.2/2

Something I don't understand and wish I did is "what are the basic principle(s) for how quantum computers work?" I've read a few articles here and there, and if anything, they make me feel like I should already understand this.
As I think about it some more, it's more likely that the articles don't explain it because the author doesn't understand it well enough to explain it and/or assumes the audience isn't interested.

I'm a little surprised that in 2024, Microsoft hasn't made native Office 365 binaries for the Xbox.
The last two XBox generations are heavily based on x86 commodity hardware, and support mice and keyboards. In some households, the most powerful computer would be the Xbox console.
I assume the main reason they haven't is marketing reasons -- Sony would advertise that the XBox is for boring work console while PS is pure fun.

I just finished my ~4th play through of the TV series Mom (2013). My quick review.
(very mild spoilers)
Mom is one of my favorite post-2000 comedy TV shows. The show follows Christy, an alcoholic in recovery, as she tries to juggle work, raise two kids, and rebuild her messy relationship with her often‑chaotic alcoholic mother, Bonnie. Many alcohol, drug, & sex references, so not kid friendly.

Given the record-setting layoff pace of 2025, the pressing etiquette question of this time:
What is the respectful waiting period after a highly valued colleague is fired before you can delete your recurring 1:1 meeting from your calendar?
Joking, not joking.

Presenting my #CyberWeek shopping haul for 2015!
About 10 years ago, I found this brand and model socks I really like. These socks are an anti-luxury in that they are all about the value: comfortable and durable, but not fancy. I only buy these now, some in white and some in black. Through attrition, I’ve replaced everything (except thermals) with these.
My #CyberMonday tradition is buying replacement socks for the ones I wore out the year before. 💰

Is VB.net (Visual Basic dot net) still in use?
At the time Microsoft introduced #DotNet, Visual Basic had a pretty healthy user base, but now, I can't recall the last time I saw VB mentioned anymore. It's as though all the shops that were using Visual Basic jumped over VB.net straight into C# (C Sharp).

I'm disappointed to learn today that my name twin Scott Miller, founder of Apogee Games, is an idiotic antivaxxer.
Please let me reassure you that despite having the same first and last name, I am very pro vaccine.

The lowest cost US-market Jaguar, Land Rover, & Rolls Royce are $49,800, $49,900, and ~$350,000. Prices are 2x and up for other models. Folks that buy these cars have money to spare for luxury.
A Barbie doll is around $15. Some folks can barely afford any toys for their kids at birthdays & Christmas.
Guess which consumer Turnip took sympathy upon today, while derisively mocking the other?

As a lifelong USAian, I'm quietly cheering every time I read about a Canadian boycotting USA products because of POTUS47's stupid trade war and threats of annexation.

In the last 1-2 months, I've seen many #NintendoSwitch physical games go out of stock & not be restocked. (Example: Pokemon Sword and Shield phys are both currently sold out at bestbuy.com)
I'd also read an article that observed several other games that seem to be out-of-print; they surmised the reason is expectation Nintendo will release their next gen console this year.
If you prefer physical Switch games, maybe now is the time to buy them.

My favorite thing of watching Monk is when I can shout "I think I've solved the case!" before Adrian Monk does so. About half the time, I'm "wrong", but so what. It's fun.
Compared to other shows, the mysteries here are not too challenging. Well, you know, sometimes I like to sit down with an easy-rated Sudoku or Crossword at the end of a long day. Not everything has to be challenging or pushing my development. 😜
