In an idle moment I wondered whether TRACERx - the landmark cancer evolution studies - were named after “Racer-X”, the third EP by Big Black. Sorry to report that it stands for TRAcking Cancer Evolution through therapy/Rx.
-
Huh.
For all these years I thought CLU - as used in the film TRON - stood for ' Command Line Utility '.
Apparently it actually stood for ' Codified Likeness Utility '
THIS FEELS LIKE A MASSIVE, NEEDLESSLY TERRIBLE, RETCON.
I know - I shouldn't care, but I do 😞😮💨
Just me? Was I always just misinformed ?

New Hubble programme ULLYSES is a backronym for Ultraviolet Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards.
But does the change in doubled consonant change the pronunciation?

I still find it ... curious, but very #astronomy on-brand that one of the prime and best studies stars with earth-sized #exoplanets is named #TRAPPIST1, which comes from the telescope #backronym name that it was discovered with (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope), which of course is Belgian, since #Trappist #beer is a signature drink in #Belgium.
So we have exoplanets, named after a beer, named after an order of #monks, named after a city in #France.
Classic astronomers!

On today's episode of forced backronyms :
« Animals such as H. zschokkei were originally cancerous growths in free-swimming jellyfish that escaped their parent organism and thereafter became a separate species parasitizing other animals. Such an origin is referred to as a SCANDAL (Speciated by CANcer Development in AnimaLs) »
I hereby name this acronym CRINGE (CReated by an INcompetent bioloGy Expert).
Sounds grumpy, but it shouldn't : tbh it just made me laugh.

@ChrisPirillo And now #pogs are back, in #emote form! The expression #Pog, #poggers, #PogChamp, or #PogChampion is used to show excitement.
It was coined in 2011 by #Twitch Streamer Ryan "Gootex" Gutierrez, when he won a game of Pogs on stream. He made the PogChamp emote, a picture of his face, surprised when a cameraperson knocked over his tripod on his #YouTube series Counter Cross TV in 2010.
The emote was so popular, Twitch added it as one of their global emotes. Its use spread on Twitch and #Discord before and especially during the 2020 #Covid pandemic, when kids stuck at home used the services to communicate with friends. It also became a #backronym for #PlayOftheGame due to faulty etymology.
As the expression's use grew, the emote itself fell out of favor. On January 6, 2021, #Gootex tweeted in support of the #January6thinsurrection, calling Ashli Babbit, who died in the riot, a "#MAGAmartyr." Twitch responded by removing the PogChamp emote and holding a contest to find a successor.

@PetraPhoenix As in brought to you by those who Can't Use Normal Thinking Systems if you'll pardon the #BackroNym as in maybe if it was used locally until clean forms of steel making exist but 70% will be exported & Carbon Negative Steel can already be made if you can afford price penalty which will greatly diminish over time to the point where there will be a price penalty for CO2 polluting steel in the not too distant future #EndRANT

Some really overdo it with finding a good #backronym to a catchy word they would like to use as acronym.
(This time it's #ASUS with their XG-C100C 10-Gigabit PCI-E NIC)

I’m often critical of #branding, for various reasons. Which doesn’t mean that it doesn’t affect me.
And maybe this French #HardSeltzer brand has nothing to do with the (in)famous #covfefe meme. The “Fait En FrancE” capitalization smells of #backronym formation.
So it’s interesting to learn that the team included perfume makers.
(For the record: it tasted pretty much how you’d expect it to taste.)
