  1. Is it too late for someone early 50s to decide they want to abandon their data analytics career (BA, MS, 30 years experience), and start a new path studying television academically? Uh, asking for a friend.

Incidentally, what would be a good title for a thesis studying the left-at-the-altar trope, and how and why it appears much more frequently in sitcoms than in real life, and maybe explore some sociological intersections with that?

  2. I just finished my ~4th play through of the TV series Mom (2013). My quick review.

    (very mild spoilers)

Mom is one of my favorite post-2000 comedy TV shows. The show follows Christy, an alcoholic in recovery, as she tries to juggle work, raise two kids, and rebuild her messy relationship with her oftenโ€‘chaotic alcoholic mother, Bonnie. Many alcohol, drug, & sex references, so not kid friendly.

  3. If you are looking for a breezy, easy-to-watch show, Workin' Moms isn't it. This show really leans into tragic comedy at times.

MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER MILD SPOILER: the abundance of morally ambiguous characters and situations makes it hard to watch at times. Lionel may be the only character I love. More than once, I had to stop watching for a bit because a character or plotline left me upset enough that I needed a break.

  4. I started watching Workin' Moms (2017) this week; I'm about midway through Season 3 now. Very funny from the perspective of several married, working mothers. I would call it a "modern sitcom", meaning it is less formulaic, less laugh-out-loud funny, less punchlines & absurdity, more about the humor (often tragic) in everyday situations and conflicts.

The women's perspective helps keep the show original and interesting.

  5. My favorite thing of watching Monk is when I can shout "I think I've solved the case!" before Adrian Monk does so. About half the time, I'm "wrong", but so what. It's fun.

Compared to other shows, the mysteries here are not too challenging. Well, you know, sometimes I like to sit down with an easy-rated Sudoku or Crossword at the end of a long day. Not everything has to be challenging or pushing my development. ๐Ÿ˜œ

  6. I think Monk may be a spoof/satire of mystery genre. Or maybe it's such a well-constructed mystery that my modern, cynical view sees it as satire.

I don't think there's anything too deep here. This is escapist entertainment: interesting characters, not too much drama, humor, a puzzle to solve.

As a critique, I'll say I'm about 10 episodes in, and I'm already growing weary of Monk's eccentricities going too far, especially when they seem self-contradictory.

  7. Last week, I ran out of TV to watch, did a watchlist deep dive. I've had Monk (2002) queued for over a decade. I've seen parts of episodes over the years, but I guess it didn't appeal enough to give it a try before now.

Took me just 2 episodes to get hooked. It's quirky, but the initial episodes do a good job of on-ramping viewers. That may be why I couldn't get into by just watching random episodes whenever I happened to be someplace with cable TV.

  8. I had an epiphany tonight where I realized the Star Trek formula of, conflict, escalation, and resolution in just an hour was exactly what I needed to recharge my psychic batteries and get me though my 30s with my sanity mostly intact.

If only real-life problems could be tackled and resolved so quickly and neatly.

  9. When I was in my mid 20s, I developed a bit of a pretentious attitude about television. So much of it is mind rot, and I was above that. I was reading books.

And then over the next 15 years, my attitude about television changed. My life had become more complicated, more stressful, more challenging, and television at the end of the day was my escape.
