Waiting with a few others outside pharmacy for it to open at 9. Last time a lady showed up and unlocked it from inside about 9:05, so when 9 comes and goes I'm not fretting.
But sometime around 9 I did hear what sounded like a small solenoid. Like, maybe if one were to have an electronic lock. That's silly, the lady unlocks it like always. Eight minutes later, still no lady, I just check and of course it was unlocked electronically.

I only recently learned that the derailleur doesn't even know what it is doing, all of the indexing is up to the shifter and the derailleur just moves based on cable pull distance.
A TanPan (or JTek) takes that indexed movement from a road shifter and makes it slightly longer in order to move MTB derailleur enough to match cassette spacing.

I was reminded yesterday that I have never installed a derailleur, after messing up even attaching to hanger. Once that was fixed it's been a struggle of running cable through WolfTooth TanPan, attaching to derailleur, adjusting screws, and realizing maybe I didn't start with shifter in highest gear after all.
Lots of light bulb moments and confidently swaggering in to finish it, followed by choice words and a hasty retreat for more "thinking".

Down at Amherst with the kid and brought mt bike just in case. It rained last night and a couple intense ones this morning so I didn't want to be "that guy" who rides the mtb trails when muddy. Rode about 6 miles of paved rail trail, some back roads, then the last few miles in pouring rain. So much greener than back home and lots of wetlands along the rail trail.

Stole Schrader core from wife's ebike and took this for a quick spin in 37°F cold rain. Bike felt pretty good overall, really gotta squeeze to get even a little bit of braking. Shifting was smooth, at least rear derailleur.

If someone wanted to get new wheels and tires for this what size would they shoot for? That is, is there a common, easily obtainable size that would fit?
Update: I should have said "rims" and tires.

A year after buying it, blasting down a steep hill in Rapid City, I noticed a bad transition between road and railroad tracks ahead. Just enough time to shift weight and hold tight as it hit the tracks, splaying wheels in two places, tires instantly flat. I didn't have money for new wheels, so bike shop straightened them the best they could. Ever since it's had a slight *thump, thump* when brakes are applied. ":^)

Dreamt I was riding my first road bike down gravel roads last night and it worked better than expected. Bought in the early 80's when I was in the Air Force, this was my first real bike not from a hardware store. Dug it out of the garage this morning to check everything, maybe an easy ride if it warms up. Front tire inflated easily (Presta), but had to reconfigure pump for back valve, which inflated and immediately emptied. Not only is it a Schrader but it doesn't have an inner core. Yeah, it's been a while.
