The artistic participative Shelter Construction Site of the "Gestaltung" masters project "Common Shelter" started successfully!
-> Next building days are the 16th and 17th may 2026!You may join us on a bike, too: "From the art hall to the art construction site" -> Meeting point is friday 15th may 2026 16:00 at the "Thinker" in front of the "Kunsthalle Bielefeld". One way is about 25 km. If you like to build with us, please send a mail to shelter[@]apgw.de or say hello here in the fediverse for details.
If you just like to ride the bike with us, then no announcement neccessary. If you ride with us AND have cargobike or big biketrailer capacity (aleXargo etc), please contact us: A bike company from Bielefeld told me today that we can re-use good, long wooden trash-planks from them!
Look back:
From 2nd to 4th of may 2026 we made a good start, thanks to the well trained and powerfull co-artists. Earlier in the day, Judy and I collected free potting compost from the local council. It's the result of an industrial composting process fed by what people put in the green bins, as well as cuttings of trees and other plants by council workers. This stuff is somewhat smellier than commercial potting compost so we'll only be using it outdoors.

I bought a bike trailer! now I can hopefully go camping this summer with my ebike :drgn_sparkle:
I think I'm going to add some sealant to the base right away, that way it won't get wet inside if it ends up raining in the summer
-
Photo from today's delivery run. The parcels in the trailer are all full of bike parts and as always they begin their journeys to customers by bike. Even on a horrible rainy day like today.
Still, I shouldn't complain about the weather. At least it's warm today (about 10 C !) which is a big contrast from three days ago when there was still snow everywhere.

Started moving instruments today. One load of saxophones - I'd rather expected the baritone and its bulky case to be pretty much a load by itself. But it, three altos, three stands, and a case full of accessories all packed nicely into a single trip, along with a couple boxes.

lake forest park town centre!
the test ride downhill was pleasantly uneventful. it’s heavy but well-behaved.

More parcels of bike parts beginning their journeys to customers.
This time I've taken the photo on a cycle-path heading into a tunnel. If I were driving a car I'd be heading toward that traffic light on the left, but the cycle-path goes through the tunnel so I never have to stop when cycling.
This is a good example of how to give cyclists an advantage and make cycling more efficient than driving.
Though I've lived here for a long time now, I still find it amazing that I can use cycling infrastructure of this quality on a daily basis, that it works so well, enabling so many people to ride bikes, and that it keeps everyone safe.

I'm just back from another run to the post office with parcels full of bike parts.
Assen's cycle-paths make all kinds of journeys easier. This kind of infrastructure really should be everywhere.

I finally got around to assembling my #BikesAtWork trailer to help with a New Years Day #BikeMove.
It can be set up in short, long and extra-long modes. Here it is in short-mode, a perfect fit for some storage tubs I already had. In extra-long mode it is fully qualified for the #CarryShitOlympics.
To pull it, the other day I put together this (mostly) parts bin Specialized RockCombo (iykyk).
-
The pre-order discount is pretty good at the moment and makes it possible for me to afford a #GrinTechnologies rear hub motor kit.
Between the (optional) long-john cargo capacity up front and my #BikesAtWork #BikeTrailer that can be converted between 81cm/160cm/240cm lengths (or swapped out for my #BurleyTravoy trailer/handcart or just a set of panniers, I’ll be able to dial in what I need for the specific task without too much fuss. I hope.

I'm going to have to just blue this spring after all:
https://mastodon.murkworks.net/@moira/113217063706250135
The reason is that while I could get nickel onto most of it, there are parts that were just too close together and/or too far away (chemically) from the donor plate to get nickel onto without way more complicated shenanigans than I'm going to muster.
This means inside the coil. Also where the coils rest against each other, but mostly the inside.
I think this'll be fine overall, but it definitely shows limits to my current nickel-plating setup. The outside looks real good but the spring gets wet and you dry it, there's more rust coming from the inside of the spring and that's not okay.
So, bluing it is.

Honestly pleased with this, this was just a chunk of rust when I got it. I didn't even know if it was salvagable and kind of doubted it.

three minutes per side, no sanding really - this is just about water resistance. i sanded a little after this (600 grit wet) and am going for two more minutes per side at 3.5 volts

Right, this!
I took the PHA cargo trailer hitch adapter off the bike for examination, and the result is: it's fine! 100% good. The extra flexibility of PHA really seems to have helped. That or the layer adhesion vs. PLA is as much better as claimed. Or both.
So as of now this is the production model, I guess! Not that there's going to be a production run since it's built for exactly my bike and this trailer lol BUT it does seem to work and even with the inexplicable trailer flip came through the long ride completely fine.
Even the little crack on a part I've since engineered out wasn't actually a crack. Just a weird seam.
Victory again for TAK! I guess. :D
