Today I did some baking while it rained before taking parcels to the post office in the afternoon when it was dry.

So now we have apple pie and bread for the weekend, and our customers will soon receive the bike parts they'd ordered.

Hot day today. I went out for a bike ride this morning before it got it really hot, but returned almost immediately because it didn't seem healthy to cycle with the awful air quality. There's a wild fire in the south of the Netherlands and the smoke had come all the way to Assen.

This afternoon the wind had turned and I took parcels to the post office. By that time I didn't really want to cycle any further due to the 33 C temperature. I'll try to ride a bit further this evening when it cools off a bit.

Climate change has an affect on the most environmentally friendly form of transport. But people are still driving cars.

Home safe and everything put away! I did stall out up the worst part of the worst climb and honestly it was scary, but that’s why I had @annathepiper around to help out. There’s another way home I know would work - longer but skips that climb - so it’s not a showstopper. I’d do it that way with this much weight next time.

Earlier in the day, Judy and I collected free potting compost from the local council. It's the result of an industrial composting process fed by what people put in the green bins, as well as cuttings of trees and other plants by council workers. This stuff is somewhat smellier than commercial potting compost so we'll only be using it outdoors.

I bought a bike trailer! now I can hopefully go camping this summer with my ebike :drgn_sparkle:

I think I'm going to add some sealant to the base right away, that way it won't get wet inside if it ends up raining in the summer

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite The only hitch I’ve used came with my MayaCycle trailer and it replaces the QD skewer with one built to allow the trailer arms to attach at the real axle on both sides. That allows me to have maximum trailer maneuvering. #bikenite #biketrailer

Biked with cargo trailer to pick up an old junky free monitor to use as a display for my signal level meter. The trailer worked fine, and it’s the furthest I’ve gone with it so far. So, yay!

(And it’s very old and junky and this rare single-purpose use kept it out of recycling, nobody else wanted it. Everybody wins. ^_^ )

Photo from today's delivery run. The parcels in the trailer are all full of bike parts and as always they begin their journeys to customers by bike. Even on a horrible rainy day like today.
Still, I shouldn't complain about the weather. At least it's warm today (about 10 C !) which is a big contrast from three days ago when there was still snow everywhere.

Started moving instruments today. One load of saxophones - I'd rather expected the baritone and its bulky case to be pretty much a load by itself. But it, three altos, three stands, and a case full of accessories all packed nicely into a single trip, along with a couple boxes.

@ascentale @ai6yr @bikenite I have only bikepacked once as neither of my tents fit well on my bike, so I almost always use my trailer, sometimes with panniers for quick access. My trainer is single wheel so it’s really important for me to make sure I balance the load properly but having done so it’s really stable and I don’t have the issues with cross winds quite so much as bikepacking with frame and panniers. #bikenite #biketrailer

After work today I got the side reflectors onto my cargo bike trailer. ^_^

Oddly, the most forward/leftmost reflector is white but looks yellow in this photo, I don't know why. (It's also less side-facing than it looks in this picture, and would be seen at least as well from forward, if not more.)

Anyway, the true side stickers are yellow, the front-of-platform stickers are white. So.

I bought something today

I bought something for my second bike trailer build on Saturday.

The trailer’s basically been done for weeks already. I’m adding details and accessories now, like, I want to sew a cover, and I want to add reflectors. So I took it for another little shakedown ride, this time to a hardware store I found out had DOT-grade adhesive reflectors in stock for… more money than I’d like, but not unreasonable money.

Here’s what I’ve done with those stickers so far. I think it’s pretty good. The rear view is my biggest concern, given that my bike is well-lit, and this… frankly ugly flash photo… makes the reflectors pop well, showing how they’d reflect headlights. It’ll help:

But it occurred to me as I was doing all this that…

This is the first time I’ve bought something for this project.

The trailer frame was salvaged from a semi-wrecked kiddo hauler abandoned outdoors for over a year. The platform is made from a cargo pallet someone illegally dumped and I salvaged; the metal clamps holding it in place I shaped out of old building strapping. I literally found the warning flag pole on the street, and it inserts into a metal tube salvaged from a housemate’s broken laundry rack. I made a flag for it from scrap fabric. The cage is made from Buy Nothing-listed DIY cube shelving, the kind that never really works right, but there’s nothing wrong with the wire squares that a whole bunch of zip ties can’t fix. Other parts are 3D-printed, designed by me, printed by me, at home.

Everything else was just ordinary supplies I already had.

But when it came to the reflectors… I looked around a little, but then… I just went and bought something. And I have kind of mixed feelings about that!

I mean, it’s fine. Really. At some point, I’m going to want to replace these tyres, too, and that’s a purchase – they were also in the outdoors for at least a year and as a result are semi-rotted. They’re only still usable because I used a lot of silicone glue to make a reinforcement coat on the walls. (Hey, it’s not stupid if it works, and it works.) So sooner or later, money was going to be spent.

But even so, just buying something – even if it’s something you legitimately can’t make at home, like DOT-spec reflective material – feels like cheating. I kinda don’t like it.

Part of it is that I started making these cargo carriers around the time Anna got laid off, and even after she finally got a new job earlier this year, I kept the same approach. Sure, it helped that I already had basically everything I needed by that time, but also, we’re trying to make up for a lot of lost money and time, so I kept doing things the same way.

Until today, when I didn’t. I did it the normal way instead. It’s a very normal thing. You need an item, a part, whatever – you can just buy it.

And… maybe… maybe it’s just how extremely abnormal everything else is right now, in this endless emergency… but…

I just don’t know how I feel about that.

everything else has been buy nothing, stuff i printed, or zip ties and/or supplies I already had.

oh, and an old cargo pallet somebody illegally dumped and i recovered.

i have mixed feelings about this!

(tho' honestly I should probably replace these tyres, they're a bit of a crackfest held together by silicone glue xD )

short test ride this afternoon of the bike cargo trailer, just over to a hardware store to get some reflectors _for_ said cart

and in doing so i discovered that the small change in my handrail attachment system that gave additional height range wasn't gonna be stable, they were going to slide down and through, so i had to undo it so that's kinda too bad

but when I got home I got to put dot-grade reflectors on the back of the cart so that's nice. probably going to put white and red along the sides where visible, too.

and i should add something to the wheels, too

So I did this instead. I like the idea of having a single solution, but I like the idea of not bending the cage more.

Maybe I could make something that goes under the bed and stays under the bed and drill a hole in the bed for the flag pole, but I don't really want to drill a hole in the bed, even if it's only 8mm wide.
