  1. If I'm understanding the article correctly, the lesson here is not so much "don't be exciting and romantic" as "don't make your first date suggestion be 'let's have sex inside a museum'"

  2. Why the 8-hour workday is a scam for people with ADHD (like me).

To cater to the way my brain works, I get in the rollercoaster at the start of the workday and I follow the impulses of my brain.

This sounds crazy, but actually I found out that this works better for me than resisting the thoughts and impulses that my brain wants to follow.

    In practice this means that:
    - focus work HAS to happen in the morning or it won't happen at all
    - I do way too many things sequentially, a lot of context switching
    - I am extremely tired by 15:00-16:00 because of said context-switching

I did get a lot done, though. Way more compared to the era where I was cosplaying as a neurotypical person.

This is how I work "with" my ADHD, no meds required.

  3. Nope.

  4. Monday morning, and I’ve already gotten my Covid and flu vaccines, and I’ve voted in the Toronto civic election.

It’s unfortunate that in such a tight race, there is a second (practically unknown) candidate with the same last name as the incumbent. If he does siphon votes away from the incumbent, it will be completely obvious in the post-election statistics, but with no way to prove that he wasn’t just that popular.

My personal opinion is that any time a last name is duplicated anywhere on a ballot, election workers should mention it (without naming names). Just “here is your ballet — please note some names show up more than once, so please double check your choice.”

  5. I am amused by folks who use Mastodon as a TODO app, like maybe if I tell all these people my goals for the day I’ll actually do it

  6. I'm not in the fucking mood for fucking work and it’s fucking bullshit today.

    Fuck

  7. Incubus's "Make Yourself" was a great album.

    > So don't let the world bring you down
    > Not everyone here is that fucked up and cold
    > Remember why you came and while you're alive
    > Experience the warmth before you grow old

(And the guitar, the distort and the drum line)

  8. Had the lovely opportunity to interview Gigi Masin earlier this year on the release of his new album, Movement, and he shared this about his debut: "my first album (Wind) is now considered an example of ‘ambient’ music, while when I made it I thought it could be a very Venetian version of something vaguely ‘jazz’ despite the presence of sequences made with a synth. Evidently the beat exists in me, and perhaps it has more to do with minimalism than with jazz (may purists forgive me!)"

It does sit in its own world, doesn't it? Gorgeous remaster from Michael Graves and lovely reissue presentation from Numero Group.

  10. One of the design decisions I made early on in my Forth machine is: compiling a new system must target a second computer, controlled through some kind of tether. A software emulator counts, and that's what I've been using on the Picocalc.

But recompiling the system from scratch takes about 1m25s on the emulator, which is too long. So, I granted it a secondary core, which cut the time to 22s. Longer than I'd like, but, acceptable. (Recall that the CPU is currently only 20 MHz.)

I'm not sure how useful a second core is for other applications yet. But it's nice that the CPU is small enough that I can just toss another one in.

  11. I don't know what I enjoy more: going through old tickets and fixing them, or closing them on the spot because they've already been fixed without noticing that the ticket existed.

  12. @anilineapps Recent changes to Indigo are amazing, and the app went from a secondary client to my primary. Thanks!

My only major complaint now is that it’s very often weidly slow, on both Mastodon and Bluesky. Recently I discovered that it gets fast again if I close the app, and I think I found a reproducible case that might help getting to the root cause: quickly open and close a conversation that hasn’t been loaded yet 4–5 times, and seemingly all network operations for that particular account die for a few minutes.

  15. "I wrote a response to Adam Bonica and Jake Grumbach’s piece in The New Republic about all the problems with the [Democratic Party fundraising] system. While I don’t agree with every point, it’s a very valuable article and points toward at least two straightforward if challenging-to-implement reforms. But we also shouldn’t lose sight of what an amazing accomplishment and how incredibly needed Democratic small donor fundraising is. It is a genuinely mass-based, non-oligarch system of funding political campaigns at a time when the Supreme Court has given billionaire oligarchs free rein to buy campaigns and offices at scale."

  16. Literally every comment section on any piece of technology review should have an ETF-guy.

What's an "ETF-guy" you may ask? For example, comment section of a review of plug-in batteries has one and I quote "Why would I gamble €2000 on a battery and then expect it to have zero maintenance and no performance issues over the next 13 years when I could just put that amount into an ETF and get a guaranteed 9% annual return and then have €2700 in 13 years?".

  27. "Minnesota has had a few remarkable turnarounds and conservation successes over the decades, resurrecting local populations of trumpeter swans and wild turkeys, bald eagles and peregrine falcons. But the return of those species took decades of intentional work and, in the case of eagles and falcons, a nationwide ban on the farming insecticide DDT.

"It is far rarer for a lost species to simply walk back into Minnesota to start reproducing here again.

    "But here they are.

"The return of breeding cougars is almost certainly a turning point, both for the wildcats and their push eastward, and for the Minnesota woods that harbor them, experts said."
