  1. The Oscar Peterson Trio - Affinity

1962 release that seemed appropriate to play after Quintessence, since it starts with Waltz for Debbie, and also features Ray Brown (bass, who contributes an original - Gravy Waltz) and Ed Thigpen (drums)

This is a classic piano trio session, and with Peterson at the keys, you know it's not going to disappoint...

  6. Bill Evans - Quintessence

Late period Evans, on Fantasy, from 1976. On this, he's joined by Harold Land (tenor), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

A relatively short album, with no Evans originals...but the group does a nice job with these tracks.

I'm going to excuse the bad pun in the title.

  11. Wendy Eisenberg s/t

Those who might be more familiar with the electric, experimental Eisenberg projects will probably be surprised by this folky, acoustic album.

But having gone through some personal challenges, relocations (MA loses another to Brooklyn :-(), relationships, they've written some personal songs where the backing is more standard, but the melodies are meandering and improv adjacent (to my ear).

  16. Out Of / Into - Motion II

Second LP from this great, modern jazz quintet, previously touring as the Blue Note All Stars when I saw them in Groton a few years ago.

This really does a good job of capturing this moment in time for Blue Note...and for all these incredibly talented musicians and composers.

Featuring Gerald Clayton (piano), Joel Ross (vibes), Immanuel Wilkins (alto), Kendrick Scott (drums), and Matt Brewer (bass).

  21. Letters to Cleo - Aurora Gory Alice

Sometimes you just have to support the local folks, you know?

If you don't know the band, think melody over loud guitars (usually)...in the mould of Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt, et. al.

  26. Carter, Gillespie Inc.

Seems unlikely they incorporated for this release. :-)

Part of the very enjoyable Pablo re-release series from Analogue Productions, this has two greats from different eras—Benny Carter (alto) and Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet)—playing with Tommy Flanagan (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Al McKibbon (bass), and Micky Roker (drums).

A mix of styles and tempos from this sextet, and a nice listen.

  27. Fred Jackson - Hootin' 'n' Tootin'

Although this comes from 1962 (Jackson's only session as a leader), it sounds more like later Blue Note, given the soul-jazz focus.

Regardless, lots to enjoy across the two sides.

Features Jackson (tenor), Earl Van Dyke (organ), Willie Jones (guitar), Sam Jones (bass), Wilbert Hogan (drums).
