  1. The Oscar Peterson Trio - Affinity

1962 release that seemed appropriate to play after Quintessence, since it starts with Waltz for Debbie, and also features Ray Brown (bass, who contributes an original - Gravy Waltz) and Ed Thigpen (drums)

This is a classic piano trio session, and with Peterson at the keys, you know it's not going to disappoint...

  6. Oscar Peterson, “Motions and Emotions,” 1970 on MPS

Oscar Peterson covering “popular” tunes, including “Yesterday,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Ode to Billy Joe.” I know some folks will find this schmaltzy but as an Oscar Peterson fan I really enjoy it.

My copy is the 2018 reissue in the Ambassadors for MPS series, on 180g vinyl pressed at Optimal GmbH and an insert reproducing the original master tape box along with liner notes by Till Brönner, the ambassador to MPS in this case.

  10. Count Basie and Oscar Peterson, Night Rider, 1980 on Pablo

One of my favorite Pablo records, bringing together two legends: Count Basie and Oscar Peterson, with support from Louis Bellson and John Heard. Produced by Norman Granz and engineered by Val Valentin, with liner notes by Nat Hentoff.

Basie plays organ on “Memories of You” and Peterson plays electric piano on “Blues for Pamela.” The opening 12:38 cut of the title track is, as they say, worth the price of admission on its own.

My copy, via Beatnick Records in Montréal, QC, is a Canadian pressing (Manufactured and Distributed in Canada by RCA Limited).

  15. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Be Thou My Vision and Let Thy Blood In Mercy Poured

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2025-12-14

    Jay Shepherd – Millenium Fair

Thanks Marty, It is getting close to Christmas so I thought I’d do something completely different and feature two sacred songs played on classical guitar.

Jay Shepherd is pursuing his doctorate in guitar performance and he’s a busy man. I had talked to him before about recording a solo guitar album at HairyLarryLand and what do you know, his schedule opened up last Spring and I was able to record him on June 12, 2025.

With an omni for a room mic and two cardiod condenser mics on the guitar I lucked out and got some fantastic recordings. The only comparison I can make is John Fahey.

The album, “Millenium Fair”, is mostly medieval sacred music with a couple of songs from the twentieth century. “Be Thou My Vision” might have been written in the 10th or 11th centuries. “Let Thy Blood In Mercy Poured” came much later, written by Johann Crüger in the 16th or 17th centuries. Both songs are still in hymnals today.

Jay is from Jonesboro, Arkansas. He attended ASU and took his Masters in guitar performance. He was on the faculty at ASU teaching guitar and bass. He is an in demand performer playing all styles of music but he clearly loves classical guitar.

So now, recorded at HairyLarryLand on June 12, 2025, here’s Jay Shepherd playing “Be Thou My Vision” and “Let Thy Blood In Mercy Poured”.

A swinging session with two greats, joined by Joe Pass (guitar), Dave Young (bass), and Martin Drew (drums).

  20. Oscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie, 1975 on Pablo

Pablo records, with a logo and name inspired by Picasso, was started by Norman Granz (who also produced this record) in the early seventies. There’s a ton of great Pablo jazz records—I generally pick them up whenever I see them.

Recorded in 1974 in London, this release brings together two greats but it is not a “legacy” album – their playing is still super vibrant here. (Gillespie won a Best Jazz Performance Grammy for this recording).

  22. The Oscar Peterson Trio, Con Alma: Live in Lugano, 1964 on Mack Avenue / Two Lions

First released in 2023, this set was recorded at Teatro Apollo in Lugano Switzerland by RSI Radiotelevisione svizzera (the Swiss Broadcasting subsidary covering Italian speaking Switzerland) on May 26, 1964. Mack Avenue Records is a Detroit label founded by Gretchen Valade who gets executive producer credit here. Two Lions is a label Peterson’s widow Kelly Peterson (also credited as producer) founded – the two lions being Peterson and Norman Granz.

This is the classic trio with Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums). Great recording, great mastering (by Blaise Faivre).

  23. Oscar Peterson Trio, 1961 Cologne Gürzenich Concert Hall, 2011 on Jazzline

Part of a series of Jazzline releases called WDR The Cologne Broadcasts, which collects concerts recorded by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (German public radio), including this 1961 appearance of the classic Oscar Peterson Trio with Ed Thigpen and Ray Brown.

Recorded at the Gürzenich on April 11th, 1961 by an unkown recording engineer and mastered by Thomas Sehringer for release in 2011 on 180g vinyl. As with most (all?) Jazzline recordings in the WDR series, liner notes in German and English.

They fill out side two of the second LP with songs from other Jazzline releases: John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Dave Brubeck, and Modern Jazz Quartet recordings from 1960 and 1959 in West German cities. (Better than having an etching of the Gürzenrich or something on the fourth side).

Great sounding concert – wonderful versions of “My Funny Valentine” and “Con Alma” in particular.

  27. Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Ella & Louis: Complete Studio Small Group Recordings, 2015 on Waxtime

Waxtime is sometimes a controversial label. Based on some differences between US and EU copyright law, they’re releasing classic jazz recordings without explicit access o the source material. This means they might be working from a CD, or even a needle-drop on a good vinyl copy- but the source material is more or less unofficial.

That said, I’m a huge fan of the work Ella and Louis did together. There are two primary releases: 1956’s Ella and Louis, which I have a 1956 pressing of, and 1957’s Ella and Louis Again, which I don’t currently have (but am on the hunt for). The latter is a 2xLP release, which includes some tracks that feature one or the other but not both.

This Waxtime release puts together then first Ella and Louis LP plus the tracks from Ella and Louis Again which feature both of them. (As they put it: “This edition includes all of their duets from these sessions while discarding the songs on which either Ella or Louis sit out”).

Note Ella and Louis are backed here by basically the Oscar Peterson Trio: Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Ray Brown, plus Buddy Rich (sides A&B) or Louie Bellson (sides C&D) on drums. These original sessions were all done in Hollywood and produced by Norman Granz.

For my money this is a great edition, despite unclear / unstated source material. (Direct-metal-mastering straight from a CD?). It’s well pressed, with a low noise floor, and the mastering makes the material sound lively and present. Now maybe on high end audiophile equipment one would notice more difference, but these are studio recordings from the 50s and they sound great. I’ll keep looking for an original (or an audiophile reissue) of Ella and Louis Again but in the meanwhile happy to have these on vinyl.
