  1. Veruca Salt - Blow It Our Your Ass It's Veruca Salt

Here's where Veruca Salt, after working with Brad Wood on American Thighs, got together with Steve Albini and put out an EP indicating their new, heavier direction.

It's basically two-good and two-fine tracks, a little derivative of their first album, but it was nice to get a follow-up at the time!

  5. Hey Mercedes - Loses Control

The problem with sometimes not having enough time to write something up right after listening to it is that you can kind of forget the details, other than "this was good, melodic, lotsa-guitars power-pop adjacent rock ".

That may be enough to give you the idea.

(Note: recorded at Q Division in Cambridge.)

  6. Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots

Mingus could do so much...but the album that people think of is often this—the one he put out to prove he could swing with the best of them.

And, hell, he sure could, accompanied by Booker Ervin (tenor), Dannie Richmond (drums), Horace Parlan (piano), Jackie McLean (alto), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), John Handy (alto), Mal Waldron (piano), Pepper Adams (baritone), and Willie Dennie (trombone).

  11. Lee Morgan - The Rumproller

After 1964's The Sidewinder (which I thought I'd featured, but can't find) was a success (Blue Note's biggest), you can't blame a guy for bringing the guys into the studio in 1965 to record The Rumproller, a quick follow-up in similar style...with similarly fun results.

With Joe Henderson (tenor), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Victor Sproles (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums).

  16. Beak> - Live at Zebulon, Los Angeles, April 2nd 2025

Effectively the final Beak> release (following Beak>>>>), and their first (and last) live album, it draws from all four Beak> releases.

Geoff Barrow (drums, vocals), Billy Fuller (bass, vocals), and Will Young (keys, guitar) have an obvious love for Krautrock and ominous music, and I think this does a good job of capturing their different phases.

Sad that Barrow has left the band... sigh.

  21. Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims

...and with Ed Thigpen (OK, @octothorpe ?).

Thigpen played with Hipp on the previous release I've posted with her, and given she only recorded in the US in 1954-57, and then stopped...well, there's just not a lot out there.

Having read up on her in the meantime, a rather tragic career...too bad.

But - this is great regardless. Also features Jerry Lloyd (trumpet), Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass).
