  1. Lee Morgan - The Rumproller

After 1964's The Sidewinder (which I thought I'd featured, but can't find) was a success (Blue Note's biggest), you can't blame a guy for bringing the guys into the studio in 1965 to record The Rumproller, a quick follow-up in similar style...with similarly fun results.

With Joe Henderson (tenor), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Victor Sproles (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums).

  6. "Snap Your Fingers" is a song written by #GradyMartin and Alex Zanetis. It was originally recorded by gospel singer #JoeHenderson in 1962, whose version peaked at No. 2 on the #RAndBCharts, and at No. 8 on the #Hot100. "Snap Your Fingers" also peaked at No. 5 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

  7. My first #JazzDispensary pressing. I’ve never listened to this album before, but the vinyl is dead quiet. (I’m also really, really enjoying the album. It was an impulse purchase from a discogs seller I had already added a few things to the cart from.)

And of course, unintentionally, the message on the front is timely. :rebel:

  10. “Again though, a recording has to speak to me. I’m not looking to chase down just any tape. It’s gotta hit a nerve. Just because I get to be a kid in a candy store doesn’t mean all that candy gets eaten or shown to the public. We must be guardians. We have to be the keepers of the flame. We need to look out for the best for these artists and their legacies. Especially when they’re not here to defend themselves. The project has to do something to complement their legacy, or we’re not going to put it out. ” - Zev Feldman

  11. This piece by @ethaniversonpiano.bsky.social about the resurgence of #JoeHenderson is also a wonderful tribute to the recently deceased #AlFoster. Iverson’s writing about #jazz is lucid, erudite, and informed by a deep understanding of - and love for - the #music. open.substack.com/pub/iverson/...

  12. “The balance of esoteric+ earth was perfect, especially since ( #AlFoster) was also a modernist, someone who also knew every kind of popular fusion-2-funk idiom from Billy Cobham to Steve Gadd. It was “old school #jazz” but hardly retro in outlook.” iverson.substack.com/p/tt-525-an-... #JoeHenderson

  13. Duke Pearson - Wahoo!

Recorded right around this time in 1964. I didn't know Pearson was Blue Note's A&R man, just that he appeared on (or arranged) lots of other Blue Note LPs.

Anyway, this is accessible and exuberant, and features Donald Byrd (trumpet) and Joe Henderson (tenor), some flute work by James Spaulding (alto, too), Bob Crenshaw (bass) and Mickey Roker (drums).

  18. Joe Henderson, Mode for Joe, 1966 on Blue Note

This was Henderson’s fifth studio album (as a band leader), joined by: Lee Morgan (trumpet), Chris Fuller (trombone), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Cedar Walton (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Joe Chambers (drums). Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Really wonderful Blue Note 60s jazz.

My copy is a 2024 reissue in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series – all-analog 180g vinyl pressings mastered […]

Crazy to think I hadn't heard this until about a year ago. Comparing the previous Impulse reissue to the recent #ThirdManRecords release, the latter definitely sounds improved. Less distortion in the mix, better extension, improved soundstage. <End audiophile rant>
