After listening to the incessant rain last night, I almost had 2nd thoughts about pioneering the #SlowWays route from #Buckfastleigh to #Ipplepen today - expecting #Devon #byways & #bridleways flowing like rivers or boot-deep in mud. A bit of both, but surprisingly passable. A flooded meadow proved more tricky. The original route, Bucipp 1 fails due to an access issue (lack of!), but I’d an alternative up my sleeve - Bucipp 2 gets 4⭐️ imo.
#Cake from Broadhempston community shop helped greatly! -

This clapper bridge spans the Becka Brook in the wooded part of the valley between Greator Rocks and Smallacombe Rocks. It’s a route from Haytor to Hound Tor, so very popular in the summer. Nice & quiet today though 😊.
I’m no horse rider, but I think you would need a sure-footed mount to negotiate the mossy boulders of the bridleway on the way down, which was also running like a stream after days of rain.

It’s fantastic that trains again run to Okehampton. Easy car-free access to the high moor. And a nice little train ride too!
A loop to Belstone Tor today, through the East Okement valley. One of my favourite walks, beautifully autumnal today. A sunglasses & waterproofs kind of day.

Reviewed a route from Lapford to Crediton as part of the #SlowWays network. A damp start, which turned into a lovely afternoon. Walking ancient (albeit a bit wet and muddy) #byways and #bridleways through the beautiful, peaceful mid #devon countryside. Reached Crediton just as the sun went down, tired and muddy (and with squelchy boots), but happy.

‘Beware’ the cows but ‘do not panic’ & a sheep ‘warning’! In fact, there were neither in sight, but I was on high alert!
Tbf, they weren’t off-putting at all. First time I’ve seen a ‘do not panic’ notice though. I wonder if it helps. -
Path signage here is fantastic & easy to follow. Unusual then to find a sign that had been interfered with - a #fingerpost arm had been reattached pointing the wrong way, the writing upside down was an obvious tell! Also that it clearly should have been pointing back in the direction we’d just come from. Luckily my Swiss Army knife had a Phillips screwdriver! Once a row officer, always a row officer 😁. Glad no one happened upon us, I might’ve had trouble explaining that I was actually fixing it!

When I’m passing a crossroads called ‘Five Lanes’ of course I’m going to count the lanes! Just four on the #Fingerpost…but here’s no.5 🤔.
Not just me that’s noticed…there’s already an application to add it to the definitive map of #PublicRightsOfWay. Maybe one day there will be five sign arms.
Not the access issue mentioned in my previous toot btw, I was just passing & curious 🧐

A good old #Devon #Byway for #FingerpostFriday

One for UK #walking fedifolk..
Is anyone using the OSMaps App having trouble with it saving activity? The last two routes I walked did not save, despite me recording them, nor was there a prompt to save after I hit finish. Many thanks.
Edit: is anyone using it and not having problems? Wondering if it’s something in settings. Thanks again!

While the OH did his own thing in Nottingham I went exploring. I caught the train to Matlock Bath then walked a circuit to Matlock & back. The early sunshine gave way to grey skies & drizzle unfortunately, but it was still a good leg stretch.
Interesting-looking chapel in Matlock Vale. Couldn’t get inside, but apparently it’s decorated in the arts & crafts style.
Had a bit of a vertigo moment on the path high above the Derwent gorge on my way back.

We have sunshine so I can get some outside jobs done…and take photos of bees and flowers.

No walk for me today but here’s a bumble 🐝 on musk thistle from the other day.
-
Devil’s-bit scabious with honey bee seen on my walk earlier. The hedges were also bursting with hawthorn berries.

It’s #WorldRainforestDay today so here’s a pic of some local temperate rainforest at Lustleigh Cleave on Dartmoor. A gem of a place, it envelops you in its damp, green mossiness.
