Well, today's lizard report had some surprises. I didn't see Bill or Donna all day but I fed Cutie in the morning Then Don/Donna's apparent girlfriend, the very light colored iguana and the other one, with the regrowing tail, both hung out with me on the wall.
The fourth iguana, a medium sized adult, took some worms I tossed to it and then skedaddled to the backyard scrap lumber pile where it lives, along with Cutie and the tiger whiptail.
The furthest one away in the photo is the very pale one that I'm calling Don/Donna's girlfriend. Note the regrowing tail tip on the closest one. It doesn't have the spots or banding of its original tail.

A few minutes ago, I met a new iguana in the backyard, hanging out in the scrap wood pile. It was a little shy, but came within 2 feet to eat mealworms.
While I was sitting there, letting it get used to me, I asked its name. And that's when it occurred to me:
Lizards are desert fairies.
Shy, diminutive, mysterious creatures that come and go on their own agenda, willing to be friends if you can build their trust, but always a little leery of us. They often appear as if out of the blue and then disappear in an instant like magic. They can be nearly invisible until you learn how to see them. Not everyone can.

Right after letting the snake go, though, I had a bit of a fright. It hadn't occurred to me before, but I know snakes will eat lizards. I haven't seen Donna the iguana all day and at that point I hadn't seen Bill the spiny lizard all day. (I saw him on his wall a little while later.) I haven't seen stubby in three days.
I was quite concerned about my lizard friends! So I wrote to my herpetologist friend and he assured me that gopher snakes far prefer rodents and that there's no evidence of one ever eating a spiny lizard. Also, most lizards are too fast. So I am relieved.

Well, there is much to report on the #LizardReport front. Donna, the big iguana (first pic) has been strangely skittish the last few days. She'll come and eat mealworms from my hand, but doesn't seem interested in climbing around on me or hanging out for very long. Was it something I said?
I haven't seen Stubby, the little desert spiny lizard who hangs out by the gate below the mailbox, in three days, which is concerning.
Bill and Cutie are at their usual spots in the backyard, plus Bill moves between his territory in the front yard and backyard pretty regularly.
There is a little desert spiny (Sceloporus magister; second pic) who has been coming up and hanging out on the porch and seems to like coming into the house when the door is open.

Dark Tranquillity – Haven (2000, Sweden)
Our next spotlight is on number 185 on The List, submitted by HauntedOwlbear.
I’m Canadian and a publishing/copy editor by trade, and yet I had no idea until encountering this album that there are two spellings of the second word in the band name: the single el’ed tranquility (i.e., what I previously thought was the only spelling) being the American spelling, the double el’ed tranquillity being the British/Canadian (i.e., correct, for me) spelling. But I digress.
Formed in 1989 and originally named Septic Broiler, Dark Tranquillity is considered to be one of the pioneering bands of the melodic death metal genre specifically, and of the Gothenburg metal scene in general, alongside (the recently departed Tomas Lindberg’s) At The Gates and In Flames. Dark Traquillity’s second LP, The Gallery (1995) is particularly seen as highly influential to the genre.
By the time we get to this album – their fifth – piano/keyboard and electronics as well as some clean vocals had already been added to their death metal sound. And this album is essentially exactly what it says on the box. It’s dark and melancholic yet tranquil in its epic yet subtle approach, a mix that I find rather uplifting if not hopeful, creating a nice little metal haven to hide in for the remainder of this craptastic year. And the band is still going strong (albeit with only singer Mikael Stanne and keyboardist Martin Brändström remaining from Haven‘s lineup), having released their 13th LP Endtime Signals just last year. So, if you enjoy what you hear here, you have a lot of darkly tranquil albums to disappear into for as long as you need.

Dance training is superior to repetitive physical exercise in inducing brain plasticity in the elderly | PLOS ONE

🎯 Key Points:

Ok here's a short slo mo clip of the bats from above before going to bed. I like this one because you can watch the last bat's flapping muscles.

It's really cool seeing the #bats from above! They always approach from below and leave by falling away. I'm assuming this is so they can stall as they approach the feeder, then gain airspeed by falling away when they leave. That's why I decided to film from above, I think it captures their flight dynamics better.
