(ARD, Wh.)

Four games at once this time — four bullet-hell shoot 'em ups from the same series, whose names are puns on the sound of gunfire and bees in japanese, all but one by CAVE.
• "DonPachi" (1995)
• "DoDonPachi" (1997)
• "DoDonPachi II" (2001)
• "DoDonPachi DaiOuJou" (2002)I meant to point out the differences in style, but they look very similar as static screenshots... 🤷♂️
So, I'll just say that I prefer the more classical look of the first "DonPachi". Also, fewer bullets.

"Guwange" (1999) is yet another bullet hell shoot'em up by CAVE.
This time, your character is on foot and movement alternates between vertical and horizontal. But you can only shoot upwards, which feels like a missed opportunity.
I feel that pre-rendered graphics lack the charm of hand-crafted pixel art and really scream for a higher resolution. Still, looks good, and the bullets consume all your brain's visual bandwidth anyway.
All text is in japanese, but that's OK. 🇯🇵

It appears as though an LLM has been unleashed upon some of the Libretro repositories.
I first noticed this on libretro/tyrquake yesterday, but RetroArch itself also had a flurry of commits. Perhaps most have been simmering elsewhere, but at least a subset looks automated.
Regardless of anyone's opinion on AI coding, this number of changes and rate of commits affect trust. I can't see how these could have been properly reviewed by a human.

I was looking for arcade games that might relate in some way to #LabourDay and started playing "Hammerin' Harry" (1990), but I'm not sure what the message of this game is supposed to be...
Harry, a carpenter, returns home to find it has been demolished by the Rusty Nailers company. He then, of course, goes on a rampage beating construction workers with his wooden mallet.
Yeah... was this game funded by an employers' association or something?

Another great game on the IGS PGM arcade board is "The Gladiator: Road of the Sword" (2003).
Like "Knights of Valour" this is also a four-button beat'em up, but here you also have a challenge mode, which allows you to fight a sequence of bosses of your choosing.
This game is hard, and the challenge mode is even harder. ☠️
Sadly, you can't play these games on a MiSTer FPGA. Not yet, at least — it seems there's a PGM core in the very early stages of development.

My MiSTer Multisystem² Analogue has arrived! 🎉
https://multisystem.uk/products/mister-multisystem-2/
This is my first MiSTer, or FPGA-based retro gaming device for that matter. It's a whole new world of discovery for me. ✨
The case is 3D-printed, but feels solid and looks nice. At normal playing distance you can't even tell it's 3D-printed. It kind of tempts me to customise it with a pair of "toxic green" side covers...

They also had two Vectrex consoles there, and these look better in person than I expected. The controllers feel a bit peculiar, though.
