https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-school-board-legislation-9.7161639
My first reaction: I worked at the Ministry of Education for almost thirty years, so know from experience that giving legislation titles like "Putting Student Achievement First Act" means the Bill is about none of those things. Its purpose is not to prioritize students or student achievement. Rather, it is trying to solve the problem of school boards pointing out that the provincial govt is undermining education by grossly underfunding it. 1/3

I don't like kicking teams like the #TorontoMapleLeafs when they're down, but watching them trail St. Louis 2-0 in the second period, I can understand why the great sportswriter Jimmy Cannon said hockey would be a better game if it were played in the mud...

We heard the #MetOpera Live in HD performance of #TristanundIsolde this afternoon and thought it was a superb production. Lise Davidsen and Michael Spyres were great leads with a strong supporting cast and wonderful orchestral playing. Yuval Sharon's direction was much criticized by some traditionalists, but offers dramatic range and intensity (clearly based on careful attention to music and text) and great visual effects. In all, a great afternoon of #Wagner.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-al-quds-decision-9.7128964
Instead of giving Doug space to fume that his cyncial politicking failed, he should be aasked why, if the injunction was so important, he and his Attorney General left it to the last minute. Obviously they hoped the judge would rule in their favour, leaving the organizers no time to respond.
I note that Doug used this opportunity to repeat his phony "protect Ontario" line. That tells all one needs to know about the sincerity of his motives.

Discuss: According to latest results, Brad Bradford got about 8.4 times as many votes as Giorgio Mammoliti, but not as many as half the votes given to Chloe Brown.
-
I'm very pleased by Olivia Chow's win. To get 37% of the vote in the circumstances is, I think, pretty impressive. Again, the first thing is to push back against any claim that the new Mayor has no "mandate". When Bailao was leading earlier with 36% of the vote, I was thinking that, if she won, none of the right wing would say she had no mandate. So they can't say that now just because they don't like the result - but they will.

Star City Columnist Esward Keenan pointedly notes that Star's endorsement of Bailão was a "decision in which reporters and columnists like yours truly are not involved."
-
Challenged on his endorsement of Ana Bailão, John Tory responds "What, me worry?"
Meanwhile, Doug Ford goes 100% fear mongering in obliging Star puff piece that never points out he said just yetserday he is “staying out of the race”. Of course, blatant hypocrisy from right-wing politicians is hardly news, is it?

Toronto Star editorial board surprises nobody. At least, they're honest enough to admit their choice is motivated by partisanship: "Chow, whose housing policy is disappointingly vague, has a long history as a New Democrat..."
I'd also point out that the board has put its cliché-o-matic into overdrive: "Toronto’s next mayor must be honest about the problems, lead with bold ideas, and forge consensus to achieve results."

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/lcbo-tentative-deal-strike-1.7269480 I hope that someone will clue in the #LCBO management that a return to work protocol is pretty universal when strikes are resolved. Or maybe some genius punk in the Ford government ordered them to do this to cause grief for #OPSEU - Ontario Cons are hopeless when it comes to #OnLab relations. I figure the LCBO leadership is probably happy to appear stupid and vindictive to please Ford.

I'd be very interested to hear the bargaining leadership's rationale for this. To start a mean and totally fictitious rumour, what if if turns out Ford offered them part of the #Greenbelt? #OnPoli #OnLabour

Gotta love the bias from whoever scribbles Toronto Star headlines: "Billions at stake as Ontario takes public sector workers to Court of Appeal". How about "Constitutional rights at stake..."? or "Court of Appeal to rule if Ontario taxpayers' reps guilty of wage theft"?

Very good piece on the #Hunka affair by Nora Loreto. #CanPoli
Also, a plug. Nora Loreto does great journalism, but her perspectives are not something our mainstream media likes to feature. Her book, "Spin Doctors
How Media and Politicians Misdiagnosed the COVID-19 Pandemic" is one of the best and most insghtful pieces I've read about our COVID experience. She could use support: so I encourage you to vist her substack page and subscribe! -
The unspeakable endorses the implausible. No doubt, the right in Toronto has suffered since John Tory ceased to be there to provide a veneer of plausible (albeit philandering) gentility.

Union files dispute over Ontar...
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/amapceo-ontario-employees-policy-dispute-review-office-space-1.7625748The ongoing incompetence of the Ontario government is amazing: ordering everyone back to the office to get a big PR splash and only later thinking to ask if there's enough office space. This is a characteristic flaw of governments that value announcements over achievements. #OnPoli #FireDougFord

So if #DougFord wins the #OntarioElection, and #Trump goes ahead with #Tarrifs in the following week, I'll bet Doug will have a million reasons why he can't cancel the #Starlink contract thid time around. If any reporter asks about it, his answer should be interesting.
He should also be asked why the premiers' meeting with low-level Trump flunkies in Washington, which he led, seems to have beem 100% ineffective.#OnPoli #FireDougFord

#OntarioElection We're just back from voting at the advance poll in #ParkdaleHighPark. A large turnout - we had to wait perhaps a half hour - and a huge shoutout to the poll workers who had started at 9:15AM, hadn't even had a break for lunch, but were working hard and doing a fabulous job!
We were happy to support the #NDP candidate, Alexa Gilmour.

An #OnPoli must read from @EmmettMacfarlane
https://emmettmacfarlane.substack.com/p/ontarios-snap-election-mandates-the
"... [Ford] has rejected out of hand the idea of cooperation with the opposition parties. Given that there are no plausible barriers to interparty cooperation on this file, this goes directly against the convention. The other wrinkle is Ford’s intentions to have the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party pay for the trips, something that in fact counters Ford’s claim this is properly government business."

@thetyee God, the haircuts...they always have such scuplted and carefully dyed hair. One wonders if it's so tight that the roots have pulled their brain from any connexion to the nervous system. And the blank, serial-killer stare: you could be next. Plus the slightly blurred American flag to tell you that, where most woulg see a vacuum, there's a surfeit of patriotic exceptionalism... #PurpleProse

#Canada #FederalElection2025 #PierrePoilievre may well stay on as the Con leader, but I suspect he'll have to reinvent himself again. He's alrady tried contact lenses and a new hair style, so I'm guessing he'll move to less snark and present more as a loving, compassionate family man. His habit of behaving and talking as though he's the smartest person in the room may be hard to break, but he has shown an ability to synthesize a new political persona when needed.
