“There has been an ongoing rejection of it, because it's understood widely to not meet the needs of all students, & it is viewed as a way of functioning to cut costs to the education system,” [Farhadi] said, explaining virtual classes ...require less funding than in-person classes." #OnPoli #OntEd

I've added an analysis page related to the reduction of Teacher Education in Ontario from two years to one year. If anyone has any research material related to this, I'd love to be able to add it to the analysis. #OntEd

I find it surprising that at least in #Ontario, there seems to be a growing popularity or at least acceptance of compulsory school attendance. We have some of the most extreme attendance laws in Canada, literally throwing kids in jail.
I have done a chart and believe compulsory school attendance infringes prima facia on many charter rights. To the best of my knowledge, despite commentary in 2006, there has never been a constitutional challenge of such legislation in Ontario.

Son came home today telling me about a class assignment in which he feels pressured by his teacher to use #AI to do a large part of it. And worried that his own work will look "ugly" if he doesn't. He's in grade 6.
So now we're teaching our kids that AI not only can do their thinking for them, but that their own creativity sucks in comparison.
Wrote a long email to the administration that I'm going to sleep on for now because I'm furious & heartbroken.

I was just reading the Ontario news release:
Without taking issue with the whole document, the subhead did raise my eyebrows. It states "Proposed changes would...direct every dollar into classrooms." This is hyperbolic nonsense. It sounds good, but all kinds of education spending does not go to the classroom. What about the salaries of the supervisors who are helping Calandra cover up constant underfunding of the system, hmm?

To quote from an OSSTF facebook post I just saw:
"The government is choosing distraction over solutions.
Shifting to CEOs with no background in education is not reform. It is corporatization.
And it will not fix overcrowded classrooms, rising violence, or the lack of supports students need."

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-school-board-legislation-9.7161639
My first reaction: I worked at the Ministry of Education for almost thirty years, so know from experience that giving legislation titles like "Putting Student Achievement First Act" means the Bill is about none of those things. Its purpose is not to prioritize students or student achievement. Rather, it is trying to solve the problem of school boards pointing out that the provincial govt is undermining education by grossly underfunding it. 1/3

You want to understand the timing of Ford's $750 classroom spending account for teachers announcement today? THIS is it. It's absolutely, 100% not a coincidence. Ford and his handlers wanted to own the education news cycle. So cynical. It's gross. #OntEd #OnPoli Cc. @[email protected]
