Another great update has landed now that the AI Horde Worker is in its own repository, a Web UI built with Gradio!
The new WebUI is completely optional and it can run alongside either the Stable Horde worker or the interrogation Worker, allowing you to tweak their settings on the fly through a very simple interface. This should make it significantly easier for people to adjust their settings.
It still needs some work (I would like some information popups for each feature), but this should work for now. Soon we’ll add things like worker control (maintenance on/off etc) as well as user information and stats.
This should also nicely allow someone to update their bridge setting while sitting on their couch and AFK. Maybe we can add to it things like bridge control, allowing it to start/stop the worker through it. Many exciting possibilities!

As I mentioned last time, we received a DMCA take-down for a couple of missing attributions on AGPL3 files. We have since added those back, but as is the case with DMCAs, once you start them, they don’t stop on their own.
We had already send a counter-notice, but unfortunately not fast enough. The Hordelib repo has now been hidden from the world. You can read the whole bogus DMCA requesting it here.
I remind that hlky had made no attempt to request those attributions informally, just went straight to DMCA, which tracks since this person is always acting in bad faith. It just in this case it’s a convenient way to attack the AI Horde project once more.
This is a minor inconvenience, as the hordelib is still available in pypi, but annoying nonetheless.
Hopefully we’ll be back soon enough, and until then we’ll just re-host elsewhere for a while.

Cory Doctorow knocks it out of the park with another great analysis of what the recent WotC decision means for the #OpenGamingLicense.
This perfectly showcases what a lot of people are missing about the strengths of the #FOSS licenses like GPL and Creative Commons: These licenses are not meant to protect the creator (like copyrights) they are meant to protect the user!
When I share something I made and I provide it to your as AGPL, what I am effectively saying is that I want you to use this, and not only promise not to ever take it away from you, but also explicitly legally bind myself to that extend as well!
The point is that people change and things change, but just because I changed my mind later or got greedy, shouldn’t allow me to retroactively take away ideas I’ve given away. In fact things like AGPL shouldn’t even need to exist, and all ideas should work likewise.
But as always capitalism has ruined everything to the point where we need to make exceptions to avoid the expropriation of even things like human ideas.
This is why proponents #copylefts constantly harp not to trust corporate licenses like these. They are not meant to protect you, they are meant to trick you.

However at this point, I'm not quite sure it's worth sticking with nja.la since I have now done the work to setup the replacement on OVH, who I hear is also safe from bogus DMCAs and is at 1/3 the cost.
If I can get a floating IP to work in OVH, I might close down my njalla server.

Recently a maintainer from jinteki.net contacted me about getting the license for the A:NR sound effects I had used in the OCTGN implementation to reuse in jinteki and casually mentioned that the Archer ICE noise was the coolest one. It had until now never occurred to me that people might appreciate the various sound effects I had inserted into the game back then for the flavour, so I did a quick search and run into this cute video about it (you can hear archer at the 13:00 mark).

Fascinating! I always like to make my games as flavorful as possible, and especially given the limitations of OCTGN, some flavour was sorely needed. So I had added custom fonts, little flavour blurbs in significant actions and finally I scoured the internet for hours and hours to find the sound effects which fit the cyberpunk theme of the various actions.
These were always meant to be just little things in an obscure game, so I’m kinda pleasantly surprised that some of them have received this sort of cult status in the netrunner community. Very cool. Hopefully these sound effects will find a second life in jinteki.net
